Immigration: What's in the New Bill?

Senate Republicans and Democrats reached a delicate compromise on an ambitious bill to overhaul the nation's immigration policy. The deal would provide legal status to some 12 million immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally and offer an eventual path to citizenship. It aims to staunch the flow of future illegal immigrants by boosting border security and creating a guest-worker program. It would also recalibrate a longstanding policy that gives preference to immigrants with family in the U.S. by giving added weight to immigrants with job skills, including education and English proficiency.

Should the FCC Curb TV Violence?

In a long-awaited report, the Federal Communications Commission recently called on Congress to draft tougher regulations on violent television programming. The report, which lawmakers requested three years ago, concluded that current efforts to protect children from violent content -- the V-chip blocking technology and a voluntary rating system -- are not effective.

When the idea of building a new US embassy in Baghdad was first mooted by the American administration in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq, there seemed to be a grandiose logic to it. The compound, by the side of the Tigris, would be a statement of President Bush's intent to expand democracy through the Middle East. Yesterday, however, the entire project was under fresh scrutiny as new details emerged of its cost and scale. Rising from the dust of the city's Green Zone it is destined, at $592m (£300m), to become the biggest and most expensive US embassy on earth when it opens in September.

Afghanistan on Bush-NATO agenda

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) -- A relaxed U.S. President George W. Bush welcomed NATO's top diplomat to his ranch Sunday for talks to be dominated by the surging violence in Afghanistan. Bush and first lady Laura Bush greeted Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and his wife, Jeannine, in late afternoon sunshine after the guests arrived by helicopter. "A little slice of heaven," Bush said of his 1,600-acre (647-hectare) getaway from Washington. The president, in blue jeans and cowboy boats, then climbed in his extended-cab pickup truck and drove the couples down the road -- men in the front seat, women in the back seat. The invitation for an overnight stay at the ranch is considered a coup, a way for the White House to underscore its commitment to NATO and its leader, de Hoop Scheffer.

Senate's 'Compromise' Immigration Bill 'Bad for America'

Immigration Activist Proposes Alternative to Senate Compromise Republican Senators have compromised the party position on immigration, saying Republicans and Democrats have "reached an immigration deal." However, fellow conservative Colin Hanna, president of Let Freedom Ring, says this so-called "Grand Compromise" is "Neither grand, nor a compromise. It's amnesty, and it's bad for America," Hanna said. Today, Mr. Hanna revealed an alternative and innovate solution. "None of the current proposals for dealing with the almost 20 million illegal aliens currently in the US - mandatory deportation, voluntary deportation or some form of amnesty – enjoys the support of the American public," Hanna said. "Within the next day or so, the Senators who are so self-congratulatory right now will taste the wrath of millions of American citizens who have made it clear that they will not support amnesty. This is a legislative blunder with electoral consequences." Hanna explains, "Let Freedom Ring has developed a workable alternative that could be acceptable to Republicans and Democrats alike. Each side will need to give a little to reach this newly-defined middle ground, but each side can also live with it. If the Senate won't listen, we'll turn our attention to the House." The groundbreaking proposal includes legalization without amnesty. Instead illegal aliens currently in the country will be required to admit wrongdoing, pay a significant fine, agree not to seek citizenship, become apart of a national database and swear loyalty to the United States. "This clearly isn't amnesty. It's closer to a plea bargain, and it begins exactly as it should: with an admission of guilt," stated Hanna. "For the good of the nation, all parties need to find a way to negotiate the details without compromising their principles. The American public expects both leadership and cooperation from their elected representatives, and the time for action is now."

Bible Curriculum Dispute Heats Up in Texas Town

But the Bible curriculum used in Odessa, Texas, and a growing number of other schools, she says, is aimed at instilling faith, not knowledge. U.S., Iran to meet in Baghdad on May 28

(CNN) -- U.S. and Iranian officials will meet in Baghdad later this month to discuss issues involving Iraq, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said Thursday. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters that the date would be May 28. Both officials were speaking from Islamabad, Pakistan, where an Islamic conference of foreign ministers was being held. According to Zebari, the discussions will be a part of three-party talks, involving the United States, Iran and Iraq.

House Dems Look to Cut Federal Funding for Abstinence Education

WASHINGTON — Federal funding for abstinence education will likely fall considerably this year as Democratic leaders said Wednesday they will let a $50 million grant program expire on June 30. The program, known as Title V, has not proven to be effective, said Rep. John Dingell, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Dingell's committee has jurisdiction over Title V funding. With a budget deficit and a war, he said the decision to eliminate funding was not a difficult one. "Abstinence-only seems to be a colossal failure," Dingell said.

I first met Jerry Falwell back in the early 1980s, when he was being billed as "the next Billy Graham." From the start, he was a lot more political than Billy Graham, but they shared genuine interpersonal warmth. Jerry Falwell, like Billy Graham, really cared about other people. He was deeply interested in knowing them better. He gave people the benefit of the doubt – always thinking the best of others. Jerry was very cordial with me even though I was a 20-something member of a media elite that was notably hostile to everything he believed with such conviction. I appreciated that. Iran should be attacked before it develops nuclear weapons, America's former ambassador to the United Nations said yesterday. John Bolton, who still has close links to the Bush administration, told The Daily Telegraph that the European Union had to "get more serious" about Iran and recognise that its diplomatic attempts to halt Iran's enrichment programme had failed. Iran has "clearly mastered the enrichment technology now...they're not stopping, they're making progress and our time is limited", he said. Economic sanctions "with pain" had to be the next step, followed by attempting to overthrow the theocratic regime and, ultimately, military action to destroy nuclear sites.

Iraq intel proposal raises concerns

BAGHDAD — Iraq's Shiite-dominated government is attempting to establish an intelligence agency that would rival the U.S.-backed organization created shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The move has raised concerns that Iraq's government is trying to blunt U.S. influence and bring intelligence gathering under Shiite control. It comes as the U.S. government has accused Iran of backing Iraqi militias that attack U.S. troops. Officials in Iraq's Shiite-dominated government, such as national security adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie, have downplayed the claims about Iran, a Shiite country that borders Iraq.

Inspectors Cite Big Gain by Iran on Nuclear Fuel

VIENNA, May 14 — Inspectors for the International Atomic Energy Agency have concluded that Iran appears to have solved most of its technological problems and is now beginning to enrich uranium on a far larger scale than before, according to the agency’s top officials. The findings may change the calculus of diplomacy in Europe and in Washington, which has aimed to force a suspension of Iran’s enrichment activities in large part to prevent it from learning how to produce weapons-grade material.

Immigration: Which bill will the Senate take up this week?

Less than a year ago, Sen. John McCain of Arizona was the most visible Republican in the fight for immigration reform, having joined forces with Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (Mass.) in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to clamp down on border security and create a guest-worker program for the nation's 12 million illegal immigrants. Now, a renewed effort is underway, but this time without McCain as Kennedy's co-star. As he stumps in Iowa and New Hampshire, McCain has handed off day-to-day negotiations on immigration to his staff and to fellow Senate Republicans Jon Kyl (Ariz.) and Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.). In his formal presidential announcement speech in New Hampshire last month, he made no mention of the issue.

Gonzales’s Deputy Quits Justice Department

WASHINGTON, May 14 — Paul J. McNulty, the deputy attorney general whose Congressional testimony in February provided a spark that turned a smoldering issue over the firings of federal prosecutors into a raging inferno, announced his resignation on Monday. Mr. McNulty, the fourth and highest-ranking Justice Department official to resign since the uproar began in Congress over the dismissals of the United States attorneys, had told friends for weeks that he was planning to step aside.

Iran 'steps up nuclear programme'

Ahead of a report to the UN Security Council, the IAEA said Iran had solved past problems and is now capable of making fuel for nuclear reactors. The findings come after a short-notice inspection by the agency at Iran's main nuclear facility at Natanz on Sunday. The West suspects Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, a charge it denies.

Iran warns U.S. over strike threat

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- The Iranian president said Monday Iran will retaliate if the U.S. strikes the country militarily. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also said Iran had agreed for the benefit of the Iraqi people to meet with the U.S. in Baghdad to discuss security in Iraq. "They (the U.S.) cannot strike Iran," he said at a press conference during a two-day visit to the UAE. "The Iranian people can protect themselves and retaliate." The Iranian president's comments followed those by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney who said on Friday from the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf that the U.S. and its allies would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and dominating the region.

Taliban Chief's Death a Big U.S. Victory

The killing of the top Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah, a one-legged fighter who orchestrated suicide attacks, beheadings and an ethnic massacre, marks a major victory for the U.S. campaign at a time of flagging Afghan support over civilian killings. As victims of Dadullah's brutality celebrated his death Sunday, analysts called the killing the most significant Taliban loss since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. But even NATO acknowledged that Dadullah, who directed some of the Taliban's most notorious violence, would soon be replaced.

Bush to pressure Senate to revive U.N. sea treaty

WASHINGTON – In a move that has already angered some of his most ardent supporters, President Bush has asked the Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate to revive a proposal for ratification of the United Nation's Law of the Sea Treaty, an international agreement defeated two years ago by Republican leadership in the upper house. Critics say ratification would compromise U.S. sovereignty and place 70 percent of the Earth's surface under the control of the U.N. – even providing for a "tax" that would be paid directly to the international body by companies mining in the world's oceans.
