Religious Tolerance Resolution Backed by Obama Administration Aligns With Islamic Bloc’s Interests

CNS News

The head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has acknowledged that a U.N. religious tolerance resolution heavily promoted by the Obama administration has the same aims as the Islamic bloc’s annual “religious defamation” resolutions, which Western democracies have consistently opposed for more than a decade.

The State Department this week hosted three days of talks with foreign governments and international organizations, including the OIC, on implementing “resolution 16/18,” a measure adopted “by consensus” – without a vote – at the U.N. Human Rights Council last March and set to be endorsed by the full U.N. General Assembly within days.

NBC Apologizes for Omitting ‘Under God,’ 'Indivisible’ in Pledge

Associated Press

An omission in the Pledge of Allegiance had NBC issuing an on-air apology Sunday during the U.S. Open.

The network opened its broadcast with a montage that included children reciting the pledge, but the words "under God" and "indivisible" were omitted – not once, but twice.

The backlash on social media was quick and harsh, with some tweets calling for a boycott of NBC.

"We began our coverage of this final round just about three hours ago, and when we did it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation's capital for the third time," announcer Dan Hicks told viewers. "Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone, and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it."

Obama Issued Proclamations for Ramadan, Eid al Fitr, Eid al Adha, Hajj and Earth Day--But Not Easter

CNS News

The White House updated its response to questions Monday to explain why the president did not put out a formal proclamation for Easter--after putting out proclamations for Muslim holidays and Earth Day.

Obama attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington on Easter Sunday and held a White House prayer breakfast last Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney pointed out.

On Friday, the President Barack Obama issued a proclamation on Earth Day. However, two days later, he did not issue such a proclamation for Easter, despite having issued similar proclamations for other religious holidays. During 2010, the White House released proclamations on Muslim holidays Ramadan, Eid-al-Fitr , Hajj, and Eid-al-Adha . The president also issued a statement on the Jewish holiday Hanukah. Also, Obama and first lady Michelle Obama wished the public a Merry Christmas on Dec. 25, 2010, in a video message.

Apple pulls ‘ex-gay’ app from iTunes App Store

Mac Daily News

Apple has pulled the Exodus International app from their iTunes App Store.

Recently, Jeff Buchanan, Exodus International’s Senior Director of Church Equipping & Student Ministries, told The Christian Post, “In no way shape or form is our message about trying to cure or do we try to promote that type of methodology or message… This is a label (gay cure app) that has been put forth by opponents to the application to serve as propaganda in order to stigmatize and really label the application in a false way and provoking a response such as you are seeing with the application.”

Katherine T. Phan reports for The Christian Post, “Over 107,477 people have petitioned Apple to remove the Exodus app from the iTunes store. The petition, launched by Truth Wins Out, a LGBT rights group, calls Exodus’ message ‘hateful’ and ‘bigoted.’ On Monday, Truth Wins Out, whose name is a play on words of Exodus’ Love Won Out conferences, urged more people to sign its petition.”

In addition to releasing a video on why Apple should remove the app, the LGBT rights group also pledged to continue pressuring Apple until the app is removed, even promising to hold a press conference featuring victims of ‘ex-gay’ programs in front of the company’s offices if their demands are not met,” Phan reports. “We are disheartened at the fact that there are activists who are rising up to silence our voice on the Exodus iTunes platform,” said Buchanan. “We want to ask that there would be fair and equal representation of religious belief on this platform as is already existing. We would like the spirit of diversity and tolerance that is so valued within the LGBT community.”

Federal funding for religious group?

OneNewsNow

A New York City construction worker who witnessed the 9/11 terrorist attacks finds it reprehensible that the developers of the proposed Islamic mega-mosque at the Ground Zero site have obtained a grant to build their "victory mosque."

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation recently authorized the developers of what is now being called the "Park51" project a grant of almost $6 million for "cultural and community enhancements." That money comes from the Community and Cultural Enhancement Program, which was set up to fund rebuilding the area surrounding the 9/11 attacks.

Andy Sullivan is a lifelong New York City construction worker and founder of the 911 Hard Hat Pledge, which is working to prevent the mosque's construction at the proposed location. He questions how a mosque project is eligible for federal funding.

"According to the IRS, they are a religious 501c3 charity, meaning they cannot have access to federal monies," Sullivan points out. "No religious institution has the right to have access to federal monies."

Campaign regards students' religious rights

Two Christian organizations are teaming up to help provide information regarding religious freedom in schools for parents and students.

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) has joined with Gateways to Better Education (GTBE) ) in the "National Free to Speak Campaign" to encourage students about their rights to express their religion.

"Religious freedom is absolutely our first liberty," notes David Cortman, senior legal counsel for ADF. "And if we lose our religious freedom, then all our other freedoms are in jeopardy as well."

He thinks the Supreme Court said it best several decades ago, when it decided that "students do not shed their First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse gate, and that includes their right to religious freedom. [So] even though they go to public schools each day, they still have a constitutional right to share their faith, to read their Bible, and to talk to other students about it."

'Dangerous' for feds to get involved in Muslim's lawsuit

OneNewsNow

A legal expert says it's a "dangerous" precedent for the federal government to sue a suburban Chicago school district for denying a Muslim middle-school teacher unpaid leave to make a pilgrimage to Mecca.

According to an Associated Press report, the U.S. Department of Justice accuses the school district in Berkeley, Illinois, of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to reasonably accommodate Safoorah Khan's religious practices. According to Islamic teaching, every adult Muslim is supposed to make at least one pilgrimage -- the "Hajj" -- to Mecca in Saudi Arabia in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able to do so. Khan had requested almost three weeks of unpaid leave.

Matt Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, tells OneNewsNow the government's action is unprecedented. "This is an absolute bully club being used by the federal government in this lawsuit against the school to literally force this school to go out of their way to make unreasonable accommodations for a Mecca pilgrimage," he says.

The attorney argues this is a "dangerous path for the government to plow" because it blazes a trail for similar requests.

Matt Staver"...Once you then say that you can take a three-week pilgrimage to Mecca, then there really is no stopping -- you can take five sections of the workday out to go pray; you can have a certain kind of ritual washing built into the school or to the workplace to be able to do your ritual cleansing," he suggests. "It just literally opens up Pandora's Box -- and the federal laws were not designed for that kind of accommodation."

Media ignoring Muslim opposition to mosque

OneNewsNow

A conservative media watchdog organization says the mainstream media is virtually ignoring the Muslims who are speaking out in opposition to the proposed "Ground Zero" mosque in New York City.

The mainstream media appears to have gone out of its way to support the premise that Islam is a peaceful religion and that most Muslims are "moderate." But the Culture and Media Institute (CMI) at the Media Research Center has found that when it comes to the question of the Ground Zero mosque, the networks have ignored those moderate Muslims who have spoken out against locating the mosque so close to the 9/11 site.

Nathan Burchfiel"You've seen the media depicting opponents of the mosque as bigots, as racists, as xenophobes -- and yet they're ignoring a pretty substantial list of Muslim figures who have come out and said essentially the same thing that most Americans are saying," notes Nathan Burchfiel, associate editor at the CMI. "But the media [is] ignoring those kinds of people because it doesn't fit the media agenda of saying that this is something that everybody wants."

U.S. funds restoration of global Islamic sites

Associated Press

This year, the Obama administration will spend nearly $6 million to restore 63 historic and cultural sites, including mosques and minarets, in 55 nations, according to State Department documents.

That includes $76,000 for a 16th century mosque in China, $67,000 for a mosque in Pakistan, $77,000 to restore minarets in Nigeria and Mauritania, and $50,000 for an Islamic Monument in India.

But that's a fraction of the total in the 2010 Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, which also will fund projects to restore Christian and Buddhist sites as well as museums, forts and palaces.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. program to restore Islamic and other cultural sites abroad is money well spent.

Rallies Over Mosque Near Ground Zero Get Heated

Associated Press

Hundreds of impassioned demonstrators -- all waving American flags, but separated into two groups by police -- descended on the site of the proposed mosque near ground zero, with opponents chanting, "No mosque, no way!" and supporters shouting, "We say no to racist fear!"

The two leaders of the construction project, meanwhile, defended their plans on Sunday, though one suggested that organizers might eventually be willing to discuss an alternative site. The other, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, said during a Middle East trip that the attention generated by the project is actually positive and that he hopes it will bring greater understanding.

Obama to host Ramadan meal

The Hill.com

President Obama will host an iftar — the special evening meal observed during Ramadan — on Friday night in the White House dining room.

Obama participated in a similar gathering last year.

Celebrations like iftar dinners "remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam's role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings," Obama wrote in a statement Wednesday.

"Ramadan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity and racial equality ... a reminder that Islam has always been part of America and that American Muslims have made extraordinary contributions to our country."

The dinner comes amid a growing controversy over the proposed construction of an Islamic cultural center in downtown Manhattan, near the site of the World Trade Center. A CNN poll released Wednesday found that 68 percent of the public opposes the project.

Thomas More to represent arrested Christians

OneNewsNow

The four evangelists who were arrested at an Arab festival in Michigan now have legal assistance.

The Arab culture festival last weekend in Dearborn, Michigan, attracted about 300,000 people over a three-day period. Robert Muise of the Thomas More Law Center (TMLC) tells OneNewsNow that four Christian evangelists were sharing their faith with Moslems on Friday night.

"For a period of time, the police, when they were coming up, they were telling some of the Moslems, who were being very vocal and using profanity and so forth, to quiet down, and [they were] disbursing the mobs and letting these Christian evangelists do what they wanted to do at the festival," Muise explains.

Lawmaker Calls for Hearings into Pentagon’s ‘Politically Correct’ Decisions to ‘Disinvite’ Conservative Christian Leaders

CNS News

A conservative Republican congressman from Georgia is calling for congressional hearings to investigate actions by the U.S. military in recent weeks to cancel or rescind invitations that had been made to two prominent conservative Christian leaders -- Franklin Graham and Tony Perkins -- to speak at military prayer events.

“I think that we need to have some hearings on this because this seems to be something that the military is spending some energy on and we need to raise the visibility on it,” Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) told CNSNews.com.

Atheist Group Calls on Obama to Endorse ‘National Day of Reason' Instead of 'National Day of Prayer'

CNS News

An atheist group is calling on President Obama to ditch the National Day of Prayer and formally recognize its own “non-theist” version called “The National Day of Reason.”

Last week, a federal judge in Madison, Wis., ruled that the law designating the first Thursday in May to be the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional because, the judge said, it negatively impacts non-believers.

Indiana School Removes 'Allah' From Holiday Show After Protests

Fox News

An elementary school in Indiana reportedly removed a mention of Allah in its holiday show after protests from a national conservative Christian group.

Lantern Road Elementary Principal Danielle Thompson told IndyStar.com that school officials in Fishers, Ind., attempted to teach inclusiveness through the second-grade program that included portions on Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Las Posadas and Kwanzaa.

Thompson said officials removed the phrase "Allah is God," however, after the American Family Association complained about the program on its electronic newsletter. The alteration was made because no other deities were named in the program.

Exclusive: Carrie Prejean Says 'God Was Testing My Faith' With Gay Marriage Question

FOXNEWS

In an exclusive interview with FOXNews.com's Courtney Friel, Miss California says her phone has been ringing off the hook with people offering her support after she took on a question about gay marriage on Sunday night's Miss USA telecast. "I have no regrets about answering [judge Perez Hilton] honestly," she said in one of her first interviews following the show, where she answered that she was against gay marriage becoming legal in California. "He asked me for my opinion and I gave it to him. I have nothing against gay people and I didn't mean to offend anyone in my answer." ...FOXNews.com: How are you feeling today? Carrie Prejean: Honestly, happy. This happened for a reason. By having to answer that question in front of a national audience, God was testing my character and faith. I'm glad I stayed true to myself. FOXNews.com: Have a lot of people been trying to get in touch with you? Carrie Prejean: Yes, lots of phone calls. I've gotten...hundreds of messages from people I don’t know, saying how proud of me they are that I stood my ground. That made me the real winner of the night. FOXNews.com: Did your stomach sink when you first heard you picked Perez Hilton's question? Carrie Prejean: I had a gut feeling. I knew he was controversial, and so was the question. Out of all the topics I studied up on, I dreaded that one, I prayed I would not be asked about gay marriage. If I had any other question, I know I would have won. ...FOXNews.com: Are you upset that Perez Hilton called you a "b**ch" in his blog rant? Carrie Prejean: Yes, but I have no regrets about answering honestly. He asked me for my opinion and I gave it to him. I have nothing against gay people, and I didn't mean to offend anyone in my answer.

Pope urges all faiths to unite against 'indiscriminate violence'

USA Today

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI on Friday urged religious leaders of all kinds to unite against those who use faith to divide communities — an apparent reference to terrorism in the name of religion. "In a world threatened by sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence, the unified voice of religious people urges nations and communities to resolve conflicts through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity," Benedict told a gathering of clerics from different faiths in Sydney. He met with representatives of Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist faiths during the Roman Catholic Church's youth festival, which has drawn hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Sydney.

Prospect of gay Lutheran bishop divides Germans

Yahoo News

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany could elect its first openly gay Lutheran bishop next month, a move conservatives say would alienate many Christians and open divisions in the Church. The July 12 election brings to Germany the question of gay clergy and same-sex unions which has caused rifts in several countries and faiths, including the Anglican community. Horst Gorski, a senior cleric from Hamburg, is standing for the post of bishop of Schleswig in northern Germany against Gerhard Ulrich, a senior cleric from the Schleswig area. The incumbent bishop is retiring in September. Gorski is a widely respected theologian and he helped set up a centre for gay and lesbian Lutheran pastors. His open homosexuality angers some Lutheran conservatives who argue his election as bishop would leave many Christians with no spiritual home.

Manifesto aims to make 'evangelical' a less-political term

USA Today

An "evangelical manifesto" being released today by a group of Christian scholars and theologians is expected to try to take back the term "evangelical" from politics and return it to its theological roots. "Evangelical" has been widely used to refer to Christians who have conservative political views, but the Evangelical Theological Society requires members to agree on just two points: inerrancy of Scripture, and belief in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as "separate but equal in attributes and glory" and essential for salvation.
