Arnold may consider Obama energy post

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in an interview aired Sunday that he would be open to the idea of serving as energy czar in a Barack Obama administration. Regardless of whether he takes that particular job, Schwarzenegger, a Republican, added on ABC’s “This Week” that he’s now committed to continuing public service even after he leaves Sacramento. Schwarzenegger endorsed John McCain at the end of January, and McCain has appeared with “the Governator” to praise his efforts to deal with climate change. A Schwarzenegger appointment would add even more star power to a hypothetical Obama administration, and would allow Obama to make an appointment from across the aisle that would not upset his core supporters.

President Clinton warns of growing polarization

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton warned Saturday that the country is becoming increasingly polarized despite the historic nature of the Democratic primary. Speaking at the National Governors Association's semiannual meeting, Clinton noted that on the one hand, following the early stages of the Democratic primary, "the surviving candidates were an African-American man and a woman." Clinton's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, battled for the Democratic nomination into June with fellow Democrat Barack Obama, son of a white mother and black father. But this achievement was overshadowed by a growing distance between Americans, said Clinton. "Underneath this apparent accommodation to our diversity, we are in fact hunkering down in communities of like-mindedness, and it affects our ability to manage difference," Clinton said.

Germans say details of Obama visit being handled

BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government has a message for presidential hopeful Barack Obama: We can work it out. Merkel had signaled unease over a possible Obama speech at Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate. A Merkel spokesman, Ulrich Wilhelm, said Friday that while details had not yet been worked out, "we are confident that we will reach a mutual and good solution which does justice to the interests of all involved." While Berlin city officials had said they were delighted with the idea, Merkel questioned whether it's appropriate to bring a foreign election campaign to a site that symbolizes Germany's Cold War division and its reunification.

Iranian War Games Test Candidates' Resolve

News that the Iranian government test fired nine long- and medium-range missiles with the capability of reaching Israel drew a quick rebuke from the major U.S. presidential candidates yesterday. Republican John McCain used Tehran's war games as justification for pursuing a missile defense shield and Democrat Barack Obama called for the U.S. to aggressively pursue diplomacy and threaten sanctions. "Iran's most recent missile tests demonstrate again the dangers it poses to its neighbors and to the wider region, especially Israel," Mr. McCain said. "Ballistic missile testing coupled with Iran's continued refusal to cease its nuclear activities should unite the international community in efforts to counter Iran's dangerous ambitions."

Gramm pins GOP identity problems on Bush

One of Sen. John McCain's campaign chairmen Wednesday blamed President Bush and Republicans in Congress for having damaged the party's brand identity but promised that the senator from Arizona will soon announce the most comprehensive and detailed economic plan "ever." The problem for Mr. McCain and other Republican candidates this year is not that the public has changed its mind on what it considers important issues, said former Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas. "It's just changed its mind about whether Mr. Bush and Republicans in Congress still care about those same issues," he told editors and reporters during a breakfast meeting at The Washington Times.

Poll: Religious Voters More Likely To Support McCain

The two-thirds of Americans who agree that "religion is an important part of their daily life" are slightly more likely to support Sen. John McCain for president, according to a Gallup Poll released yesterday. Bishop Janice Hollis of Covenant International Fellowship and a member of the Pennsylvania Pastors Network (PPN) had a different take on the poll's findings. "I believe that this is more out of racial pride than spiritual adherence for the simple reason that Obama has made his support known for abortion and same sex union, both of which are fundamentally opposed to the tenets of faith," she said. Bishop Hollis, who is African-American, said that she also believed the majority of black voters were not "100 percent" committed to Mr. Obama.

China's economy to become world's biggest in 2035: study

China's economy will overtake that of the United States by 2035 and be twice its size by midcentury, a study released Tuesday by a US research organization concluded. The report by economist Albert Keidel of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said China's rapid growth is driven by domestic demand more than exports, and will sustain high single-digit growth rates well into the 21st century. "China's economic performance clearly is no flash in the pan," Keidel writes. "Its growth this decade has averaged more than 10 percent a year and is still going strong in the first half of 2008. Because its success in recent decades has not been export-led but driven by domestic demand, its rapid growth can continue well into the 21st century, unfettered by world market limitation." Keidel said the rise of China to the world's biggest economy will happen regardless of the method of calculation. Under current market-based estimates, China's gross domestic product is about three trillion dollars compared to 14 trillion for the United States. Based on a more controversial purchasing power parity (PPP) measure used by the World Bank and others to correct low labor-cost distortions, he said China's GDP is roughly half of that of the United States.

Vehicle bombings in Iraq at lowest level in nearly 4 years

WASHINGTON — Car and truck bomb attacks have fallen to their lowest level in Iraq in almost four years, according to the military command in Baghdad and a private firm that tracks violence there. In May, there were 23 car and truck bomb attacks, the fewest since August 2004, when there were 18. Last month, the Multi-National Force-Iraq reported 24 such attacks. Cars and trucks packed with explosives have been responsible for some of the deadliest attacks in Iraq. Roadside bombs generally target a single vehicle; terrorists use car bombs to inflict mass casualties, often aiming them at ethnic or religious rivals.

Dems: Obama to accept nomination before 76K people

Barack Obama's favorite pastime is basketball, but he's taking his game to the gridiron when he accepts the Democratic presidential nomination on Aug. 28. Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean announced Monday that Obama will deliver his acceptance speech at Invesco Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos football team. The stadium can seat about 76,000, nearly four times the crowd that can be accommodated at Denver's Pepsi Center, the basketball arena where the Democrats will hold their nominating convention. The decision to move out of the convention hall heightens the symbolism of a speech already laden with historic significance. The acceptance speech by Obama, the first African-American to be nominated for president by a major party, falls on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have A Dream" speech calling for racial equality.

Israel successfully tests missile interceptor: report

Israel has successfully tested a new defence system designed to intercept rockets fired from southern Lebanon and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, public radio reported on Sunday. The "Iron Dome" system is expected to be fully operational within a year and will be able to intercept the military-grade Katyusha rockets used by Lebanon's Hezbollah militia and the cruder Qassam rockets favoured by Hamas. Citing Israeli security officials, public radio said the system would also be effective against mortar fire which has a much smaller window of warning.

Illegal immigrants face threat of no college

Some states are making it harder for illegal immigrants to attend college by denying in-state tuition benefits or banning undocumented students. In the past two years, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma have refused in-state tuition benefits to students who entered the USA illegally with their parents but grew up and went to school in the state. That represents a reversal from earlier this decade, when 10 states passed laws allowing in-state rates for such students. This summer, South Carolina became the first state to bar undocumented students from all public colleges and universities. North Carolina's community colleges in May ordered its 58 campuses to stop enrolling undocumented students after the state attorney general said admitting them may violate federal law. "The new trend is to kick illegal aliens out of college altogether," says William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, which opposes taxpayer subsidies for undocumented immigrants.

Four years ago, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples, he seemed to put the kibosh on any thought of a statewide political career. After all, that same year California voters approved Proposition 22, a defense-of-marriage initiative, by more than 61 percent. A Field Poll taken in May 2004 showed that Californians disapproved of same-sex marriage by a margin of 50 percent to 44 percent. Fast forward to 2008, however, and suddenly Mr. Newsom looks politically reborn. Mr. Newsom, 40, announced last week the formation of an exploratory committee for a 2010 California gubernatorial run, and political strategists agree that his strong identification with the gay-marriage issue should help him in the Democratic primary.

Caroline Kennedy: The reluctant operative

The question bounced around the Internet and tumbled from the lips of Washington insiders: Why would Barack Obama choose Caroline Kennedy, a reluctant public figure with little affection for modern politics, to vet the next Democratic vice presidential candidate? A month into the search, as one of two remaining members of the search team, Kennedy is emerging as an active participant, slipping largely unnoticed around Capitol Hill for private meetings and exercising the kind of discretion that made her an appealing choice in the first place. Despite initial skepticism in some quarters that her appointment was window dressing, associates and at least one member of Congress who met with Kennedy describe her as an engaged and savvy operative.

On the second day of a weeklong national tour to highlight his values, Barack Obama brought his message of faith to the battleground state of Ohio in an attempt to court modern evangelicals who are infusing their Christian worldview with issues of AIDs, poverty, global warming, and other issues of social justice. "Now, I know there are some who bristle at the notion that faith has a place in the public square," Mr. Obama said yesterday. "But the fact is leaders in both parties have recognized the value of a partnership between the White House and faith-based groups." A day after defending his patriotism in Independence, Mo., Mr. Obama traveled to Zanesville, Ohio to speak to the Eastside Community Ministry, a program that provides food, shelter and youth services to those in need. Mr. Obama used the speech to unveil a proposal to get more religious charities involved in solving the many problems facing the nation.

New Iraq report: 15 of 18 benchmarks satisfactory

WASHINGTON (AP) — No matter who is elected president in November, his foreign policy team will have to deal with one of the most frustrating realities in Iraq: the slow pace with which the government in Baghdad operates. Iraq's political and military success is considered vital to U.S. interests, whether troops stay or go. And while the Iraqi government has made measurable progress in recent months, the pace at which it's done so has been achingly slow. The White House sees the progress in a particularly positive light, declaring in a new assessment to Congress that Iraq's efforts on 15 of 18 benchmarks are "satisfactory" — almost twice of what it determined to be the case a year ago. The May 2008 report card, obtained by the Associated Press, determines that only two of the benchmarks — enacting and implementing laws to disarm militias and distribute oil revenues — are unsatisfactory.

Democrat with military background assails McCain's credentials

WASHINGTON: With Senator Barack Obama planning to visit the Middle East and Europe in an apparent effort to burnish his foreign policy credentials, the credentials of his likely presidential rival, Senator John McCain, came under sharp attack Sunday from a man considered a possible Democratic vice presidential candidate. The retired general Wesley Clark said McCain had not "held executive responsibility" and had not commanded troops in wartime. McCain's experience in Vietnam, where he was a prisoner of war for five years, has seemed at times almost to grant him invulnerability to criticism of his security background. But on Sunday he was assailed by a fellow military man, a highly decorated one who was once the NATO supreme commander.

Gun ruling's impact on election unclear

The landmark Supreme Court decision last week that voided the District's 32-year-old ban on handguns may have rekindled the gun-control debate on the national landscape, but local officials and political analysts don't expect it to last for long. Those wishing to make political hay of the issue for the presidential candidates - such as National Rifle Association leaders who already have filed lawsuits against gun bans in Chicago and San Francisco and vowed to pump the issue during the fall election - may be disappointed.

No, McCain Isn't 'Doomed'

Some pundits claim John McCain has no chance of beating Barack Obama. "The current bundle of economic troubles should doom any Republican hoping to succeed George Bush," says NBC's Chris Matthews. "It's almost impossible to believe that another Republican could get elected," insists Katty Kay, the BBC's Washington-based correspondent. They need to better understand the rhythms of presidential campaigns and show more humility in a year that's been chock full of political surprises. Some Democrats claim new polls by Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times showing Sen. McCain trailing by 15 points in each seal the deal on an Obama presidency. But both polls appear to be outliers. Other polls show the race to be close.

Supreme Court to issue decision on D.C. gun case

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court is meeting to issue its final three opinions of the term, including defining Americans' right to own guns. The challenge to the ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., is the biggest case left on the court's docket. It also is expected to resolve disputes over a campaign finance law and contracts negotiated during the Western energy crisis in 2001. The justices won't return to the bench until Oct. 6, the start of their next term.
