U.S. probes Google deal on DoubleClick

United Press

WASHINGTON, May 28 (UPI) -- The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into Google's plan to purchase DoubleClick Inc. for $3.1 billion, The New York Times said. Citing an industry executive who had been briefed on the FTC's preliminary antitrust investigation, the newspaper said the inquiry was opened last week after it was determined that the commission, rather than the Justice Department, should conduct the review. An FTC spokesman Monday told the newspaper the commission does not comment on pending inquiries.

Mosques awarded Homeland Security grants

WorldNetDaily

While the European Union investigates mosques for ties to Islamic terrorism, the U.S. government is giving mosques security grants that are designed to protect churches, synagogues and other nonprofit groups from Islamic terror. Most recently, the Islamic Society of Baltimore landed a $15,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to upgrade security at its Maryland mosque. The Council on American-Islamic Relations since April has been urging leaders of mosques and Islamic schools across the nation to apply for the DHS grants, even though the agency's program was set up to help protect nonprofit facilities that are at high risk for attacks by Islamic terrorists.

North American union plan headed to Congress in fall

WorldNetDaily

WASHINGTON – A powerful think tank chaired by former Sen. Sam Nunn and guided by trustees including Richard Armitage, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Harold Brown, William Cohen and Henry Kissinger, is in the final stages of preparing a report to the White House and U.S. Congress on the benefits of integrating the U.S., Mexico and Canada into one political, economic and security bloc. The final report, published in English, Spanish and French, is scheduled for submission to all three governments by Sept. 30, according to the Center for Strategic & International Studies. CSIS boasts of playing a large role in the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994 – a treaty that set in motion a political movement many believe resembles the early stages of the European Community on its way to becoming the European Union.

House OKs Suit Against OPEC Over Prices

CBS News

(CBS) Decrying near-record high gasoline prices, the House voted Tuesday to allow the government to sue OPEC over oil production quotas. The White House objected, saying that might disrupt supplies and lead to even higher costs at the pump. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries is the cartel that accounts for 40 percent of the world's oil production.

Should the FCC Curb TV Violence?

Wall Street Journal

In a long-awaited report, the Federal Communications Commission recently called on Congress to draft tougher regulations on violent television programming. The report, which lawmakers requested three years ago, concluded that current efforts to protect children from violent content -- the V-chip blocking technology and a voluntary rating system -- are not effective.

AMERICA'S FORTRESS EMBASSY IN IRAQ...

Drudge Report

When the idea of building a new US embassy in Baghdad was first mooted by the American administration in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq, there seemed to be a grandiose logic to it. The compound, by the side of the Tigris, would be a statement of President Bush's intent to expand democracy through the Middle East. Yesterday, however, the entire project was under fresh scrutiny as new details emerged of its cost and scale. Rising from the dust of the city's Green Zone it is destined, at $592m (£300m), to become the biggest and most expensive US embassy on earth when it opens in September.

At Climate Summit, Cities Urged To Lead

CBS News

(AP) Mayors from around the world declared at a climate summit Tuesday hosted by former President Bill Clinton and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg that cities must take the lead in the campaign to reverse global warming and cannot wait for their countries to enact national policies. “It is in cities that the battle to tackle climate change will be won or lost,” London Mayor Ken Livingstone said.

Gonzales’s Deputy Quits Justice Department

New York Times

WASHINGTON, May 14 — Paul J. McNulty, the deputy attorney general whose Congressional testimony in February provided a spark that turned a smoldering issue over the firings of federal prosecutors into a raging inferno, announced his resignation on Monday. Mr. McNulty, the fourth and highest-ranking Justice Department official to resign since the uproar began in Congress over the dismissals of the United States attorneys, had told friends for weeks that he was planning to step aside.

Bush to pressure Senate to revive U.N. sea treaty

WorldNetDaily

WASHINGTON – In a move that has already angered some of his most ardent supporters, President Bush has asked the Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate to revive a proposal for ratification of the United Nation's Law of the Sea Treaty, an international agreement defeated two years ago by Republican leadership in the upper house. Critics say ratification would compromise U.S. sovereignty and place 70 percent of the Earth's surface under the control of the U.N. – even providing for a "tax" that would be paid directly to the international body by companies mining in the world's oceans.

Gas Prices Jump 20 Cents In Two Weeks

CBS News

(AP) Gasoline prices have surged to a record nationwide average of $3.07 per gallon, nearly 20 cents higher than two weeks earlier, oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday. The previous record was $3.03 per gallon on Aug. 11, 2006. Just two weeks ago, the U.S. average for a gallon of gas was $2.87, but the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 stations nationwide on Friday showed an increase of about 19.5 cents to $3.07. That's up 88.4 cents since Jan. 19, Lundberg said.

House Votes To Expand Hate Crimes Law

CBS News

(AP) Just hours after the White House issued a veto threat Thursday, the House voted to add gender and sexual orientation to the categories covered by federal hate crimes law. The House legislation, passed 237-180, also makes it easier for federal law enforcement to take part in or assist local prosecutions involving bias-motivated attacks. Similar legislation is also moving through the Senate, setting the stage for another veto showdown with President Bush.

Congress Clears Iraq Bill; Veto Awaits

Time

(WASHINGTON) — In a bold wartime challenge to President Bush, the Democratic-controlled Congress cleared legislation Thursday to begin withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by Oct. 1 with a goal of a complete pullout six months later. The White House dismissed the legislation as "dead before arrival." The 51-46 Senate vote was largely along party lines, and like House passage a day earlier it underscored that the war's congressional opponents are far short of the two-thirds majority needed to override a Bush veto.

Feds crack down on security at chemical plants

USA Today

FREEPORT, Texas — Six years ago, anyone in a boat could have gone up the murky Brazos River, hopped ashore and walked up to a tank holding one of the world's deadliest chemicals here at the nation's largest petrochemical complex. Today, that intruder wouldn't stand much of a chance of getting close to the round, five-story storage sphere that holds a key ingredient needed to make plastic.

Wolfowitz vows to stay on at World Bank

CNN.com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Embattled World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz said Sunday he will continue to lead bank efforts to reduce global poverty, resisting calls to step down over his involvement in securing a huge pay increase for a close female friend. "The bank has important work to do and I will continue to do it," he said at a news conference winding up a meeting of the steering committee for the bank and the International Monetary Fund. The committee said in its closing communique the Wolfowitz issue was "of great concern to us all" and called on the bank board looking into the matter to complete its work.

Sallie Mae Said to Talk to Suitors

New York Times

Sallie Mae, the nation’s largest lender to college students, is in talks to be bought out by private equity in what could be a deal for more than $20 billion, people briefed on the discussions said yesterday. A buyout, if completed, would be an impressive show of muscle-flexing by private equity firms, which have grown emboldened over the last two years by acquiring ever larger targets.

Google, Utah on Collision Course Over Web 'Keywords'

The Salt Lake City Tribune

Google "Utah Legislature" and "lawsuit" and you might soon find yourself reading about, well, Google. The world's largest Internet search engine says a new state law that curbs keyword-triggered advertising is unconstitutional and probably will be challenged in court. And although the company didn't promise to be the plaintiff, its spokesman pledged to work with other Internet companies to "educate officials in Utah about the numerous consequences" of the legislation.

Pressure Groups Shaping Press Coverage Exposed

WorldNetDaily.com

ABC News reporter Bill Blakemore said he doesn't "like the word 'balance' much at all" when it comes to global warming. "After extensive searches, ABC News has found no (scientific) debate" on whether the planet is warming as a result of man's activity, he said in his network report Aug. 30. But just how extensive was that search? A few months later, in an appearance before the Society for Environmental Journalists, Blakemore said there is no need for reporters to seek balance in stories about the topic of global warming. "It was very lazy of us for 10 years when we were asked for balance from the spinners," he said. "We just gave up and said, 'OK, OK – I will put the other side on; OK, are you happy now?' And it saves us from the trouble of having to check out the fact that these other sides were the proverbial flat earth society." Blakemore, says a new book by Joseph Farah, founder of WND and a former editor in chief of major-market daily newspapers, is an example the organized social and political activists who have invaded America's newsrooms, subverting long-established guidelines and ethics codes calling for accuracy, fairness, balance and the avoidance of conflict of interest in journalism. "If you really want to understand how America's great and unique institution of a free press has been deliberately undermined by radical activists masquerading as journalists, backed by big business and encouraged by big government, you have to examine this phenomenon," says Farah, author of "Stop the Presses: The Inside Story of the New Media Revolution," hitting the nation's bookstores for official release today. The Society for Environmental Journalists is one of the "activist pressure groups" Farah cites as working within the press to promote a political agenda under the guise of reporting the news. The agenda for the next national conference, to be held in Stanford, Calif., in September, doesn't leave much doubt about where the organization stands on global warming. The topics include: Changing with Climate Change: Can Industries, Investors and Insurers Adapt? Nature Out of Sync: Why Are Trees Flowering in January? Feverish Temperatures: Human Health on a Warmer Planet Climate Change Policy: Spinning, Sinking or Swimming?
