Senate could vote on the "hate crimes" bill as early as today

The Senate will be voting, as early as today, on S.1105, the so-called "hate crimes" bill. Under S.1105, acts of crime committed against members of certain protected classes - including those who identify themselves by their "actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity" - would warrant more intense prosecution and greater penalties than the very same acts committed against heterosexuals. It would establish homosexuals as a special class of people and give them special rights.

Hindu Prayer in Senate Disrupted

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Hindu clergyman made history Thursday by offering the Senate's morning prayer, but only after police officers removed three shouting protesters from the visitors' gallery. Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple in Reno, Nev., gave the brief prayer that opens each day's Senate session. As he stood at the chamber's podium in a bright orange and burgundy robe, two women and a man began shouting "this is an abomination" and other complaints from the gallery. Police officers quickly arrested them and charged them disrupting Congress, a misdemeanor. The male protester told an AP reporter, "we are Christians and patriots" before police handcuffed them and led them away. For several days, the Mississippi-based American Family Association has urged its members to object to the prayer because Zed would be "seeking the invocation of a non-monotheistic god." Zed, the first Hindu to offer the Senate prayer, began: "We meditate on the transcendental glory of the Deity Supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven. May He stimulate and illuminate our minds." As the Senate prepared for another day of debate over the Iraq war, Zed closed with, "Peace, peace, peace be unto all." Zed, who was born in India, was invited by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Speaking in the chamber shortly after the prayer, Reid defended the choice and linked it to the war debate. "If people have any misunderstanding about Indians and Hindus," Reid said, "all they have to do is think of Gandhi," a man "who gave his life for peace." "I think it speaks well of our country that someone representing the faith of about a billion people comes here and can speak in communication with our heavenly Father regarding peace," said Reid, a Mormon and sharp critic of President Bush's Iraq policies. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said the protest "shows the intolerance of many religious right activists. They say they want more religion in the public square, but it's clear they mean only their religion." Capitol police identified the protesters as Ante Nedlko Pavkovic, Katherine Lynn Pavkovic and Christan Renee Sugar. Their ages and hometowns were not available.

Two Supreme Court Decisions Are Victories for Faith-Based Groups

In a decision issued by the Supreme Court prior to a summer recess, the court ruled in a 5-4 decision that taxpayers cannot challenge a White House initiative that helps religious charities receive federal funds. The case of Hein v. Freedom From Religion Foundation is a “victory for President Bush’s faith-based imitative,” said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). According to Sekulow, in the Hein case, taxpayers challenged a federal faith-based program in Wisconsin. The court in Wisconsin dismissed the case ruling the taxpayers had no standing, as there was no federal grant at stake. However, a federal appeals court reinstated the ruling and the government then appealed to the Supreme Court. Sekulow, whose ACLJ filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the government, pointed out that “no federal taxpayer suits are allowed in any other context aside from Establishment Clause suit challenging federal spending.

High school valedictorian Shannon Spaulding never expected her graduation speech to create such debate. But the blond honors student, who graduated at the top of her 383-member class at Wolfson High in Jacksonville, Fla., gave a valedictory speech that some said sounded more like a sermon.

Mosques awarded Homeland Security grants

While the European Union investigates mosques for ties to Islamic terrorism, the U.S. government is giving mosques security grants that are designed to protect churches, synagogues and other nonprofit groups from Islamic terror. Most recently, the Islamic Society of Baltimore landed a $15,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to upgrade security at its Maryland mosque. The Council on American-Islamic Relations since April has been urging leaders of mosques and Islamic schools across the nation to apply for the DHS grants, even though the agency's program was set up to help protect nonprofit facilities that are at high risk for attacks by Islamic terrorists.

Rev. Jerry Falwell Dead At 73

I first met Jerry Falwell back in the early 1980s, when he was being billed as "the next Billy Graham." From the start, he was a lot more political than Billy Graham, but they shared genuine interpersonal warmth. Jerry Falwell, like Billy Graham, really cared about other people. He was deeply interested in knowing them better. He gave people the benefit of the doubt – always thinking the best of others. Jerry was very cordial with me even though I was a 20-something member of a media elite that was notably hostile to everything he believed with such conviction. I appreciated that. He was very sincere. You could see it in his eyes – those windows to the soul.

Starbucks markets more 'anti-God' coffee cups

Coffeehouse giant Starbucks is standing by its campaign to put thought-provoking messages on its coffee cups despite a national uproar and threat of boycott over a message some felt was "anti-God." Controversy erupted this week after a customer became steamed reading a quote that stated: "Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure."

Will Bush veto 'thought police'?

The nation's largest public policy women's group is asking President Bush to commit to a veto of a "hate crimes" plan that, as WND has reported, opponents fear would target Christians and be used to demolish both freedom of speech and religion in the United States. "Last week the House Judiciary Committee, egged on by radical homosexual groups, passed what can only be called a Thought Crimes bill," said former White House insider Chuck Colson in his Breakpoint commentary. "It's called the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. But this bill is not about hate. It's not even about crime. It's about outlawing peaceful speech – speech that asserts that homosexual behavior is morally wrong."

Conservative Black Pastors Fight Bill on Hate Crimes

A coalition of conservative African American pastors is lobbying Congress to vote against a bill that would extend federal hate-crimes laws to cover gays, saying they fear it would prevent them from preaching against homosexuality. Several pastors last week urged House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), a sponsor of the bill, and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote against the proposed Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

More Hispanics in U.S. Abandon Religion

RICHMOND, Va. — On Sunday afternoons, when the local Roman Catholic church holds Mass for Spanish-speaking Catholics, Edgar Chilín is playing soccer in a league with hundreds of Hispanic players. As a child in Guatemala, Mr. Chilín attended Mass every Sunday. But after immigrating to the United States 25 years ago, he and his family lost the churchgoing habit. “We pray to God when we feel the need to,” he said, “but when we come here to America we don’t feel the need.” A wave of research shows that increasing percentages of Hispanics are abandoning church, suggesting to researchers that along with assimilation comes a measure of secularization.

Pope celebrates Easter Mass on steps of St. Peter's Basilica

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Easter Sunday Mass on the flower-adorned steps of St. Peter's Basilica as thousands of pilgrims and tourists jammed St. Peter's Square to join in the service and later receive his blessing. "Peace be with you," the pope said, using the Latin "Pax vobis" at the start of the celebration. Choir boys rubbed their eyes as they squinted into a hazy sun. Their voices rang across the square as the head of the Roman Catholic Church led the faithful in the celebration of the Christianity's most important feast day.

Pleas for peace punctuate Good Friday commemorations

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Some in agony, others in ecstasy, Christians around the world marked Good Friday with prayer, processions and pleas for peace. Thousands of pilgrims, some carrying large wooden crosses and others holding candles, wound their way through the narrow lanes of Jerusalem's Old City, retracing the route the Bible says Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion. And in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI carried the cross at the beginning of the traditional Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum. He described the procession as, "a journey into pain, solitude and cruelty, into evil and death."

Filipino Devotees Nailed to Crosses in Good Friday Rites

SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines — Christian devotees were nailed to crosses on a dusty mound in a northern Philippine village where Good Friday rites drew thousands of tourists and spectators. The Lenten ritual is opposed by religious leaders in the Philippines — Southeast Asia's largest predominantly Roman Catholic nation — but it has become one of the country's most-awaited summer attractions in San Fernando City's San Pedro Cutud village, about 45 miles north of Manila. Seven devotees were nailed to crosses in the re-enactment of Jesus Christ's final hours. The devotees — whose palms and feet were secured to wooden crosses with four-inch nails soaked in alcohol to prevent infection — were nailed up after a 1 mile walk to the mound, each carrying a wooden cross on their backs. Among the yearly penitents in San Pedro Cutud was Ruben Enaje, a 46-year-old commercial sign maker, who was nailed to the cross for the 21st time on Friday.

Synagogue Possible Target of Hate Crime

A synagogue on Chicago's North Side may have been the target of a hate crime after vandals spray-painted derogatory messages on the building early Saturday, police said. Officers were called to the Ner Tamid Ezra-Habonin Congregation of North Town, at 2754 W. Rosemont Ave., on Saturday evening and found the front door spray-painted with offensive language, Officer John Mirabelli said.

UK Regulations Barring Religious Schools from Teaching Against Homosexuality Approved

LONDON, March 22, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK's Sexual Orientation Regulations, that will make it illegal for Christian schools, services and businesses to operate according to their religious principles, passed its last hurdle last night in a vote in the House of Lords. A last minute attempt to defeat the legislation failed. A motion by Baroness O'Caithain that would have scrapped the Regulations on the grounds of anti-religious discrimination was voted down 168 votes to 122. The regulations will be implemented at the end of April.

Fifth Circuit Revisits School Board Prayer Case

About four years ago, the Tangipahoa Parish School Board got into some hot water with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Louisiana when a member of the Tangipahoa community complained to the left-leaning organization about certain school board practices. Specifically, the Tangipahoa Parish School Board had opened it deliberative sessions with a prayer that asked for divine guidance, protection for the president and the troops and assistance in the decision-making process. The board's tradition of opening its meeting with a prayer dated back to 1973, and this prayer, which was not boilerplate, could be given by a board member, school official, student, resident or minister. There was no indication that the board ever prohibited a person from reciting a prayer or would have been hostile to such an idea. The prayer was reflective of the community According to Edward White, a religious liberties attorney with the Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center (TMLC), "the board meetings are open to the public and student attendance is not compulsory." TMLC, while not representing the Tangipahoa Parish in the case at bar, is following the case and recently filed an amicus curie brief defending the parish's tradition of prayer.
