Jury Awards Father Nearly $11 Million in Funeral Protesters Case

FoxNews.com

BALTIMORE — The father of a fallen Marine was awarded nearly $11 million Wednesday in damages by a jury that found leaders of a fundamentalist church had invaded the family's privacy and inflicted emotional distress when they picketed the Marine's funeral. The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned later in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress to the Marine's father, Albert Snyder of York, Pa. Snyder sued the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified monetary damages after members staged a demonstration at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq. The defense said it planned to appeal and one of the church's leaders, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said the members would continue their pickets of military funerals. Church members believe that U.S. deaths in the war in Iraq are punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. Before the jury began deliberating the size of punitive damages, U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett noted the size of the compensatory award "far exceeds the net worth of the defendants," according to financial statements filed with the court.

Man Jailed for Trying to Pass $1M Bill

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Change for a million? That's what a man was seeking Saturday when he handed a $1 million bill to a cashier at a Pittsburgh supermarket. But when the Giant Eagle employee refused and a manager confiscated the bogus bill, the man flew into a rage, police said. The man slammed an electronic funds-transfer machine into the counter and reached for a scanner gun, police said. Police arrested the man, who was not carrying identification and has refused to give his name to authorities. He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail. Since 1969, the $100 bill is the largest note in circulation. Police believe the $1 million note seized at the supermarket may have originated at a Dallas-based ministry. Last year, the ministry distributed thousands of religious pamphlets with a picture of President Grover Cleveland on a $1 million bill.

Camp: Allow God in flag certificates

OurMidland

Midland Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Camp is among lawmakers objecting because the U.S. Capitol's architect won't allow God to be mentioned in certificates of authenticity accompanying flags flown over the Capitol and bought by constitutents. "This is as insulting as it is absurd," Camp said in a prepared statement. "The architect has gone way too far. If we can put 'in God we trust' on our money, then we can certainly put it on a flag certificate when a citizen wants it there." Camp and dozens of other lawmakers are sending a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi calling for "an immediate review of the authority under which the architect is making these rules, as well as the reversal of this policy which censors our citizens' right to expressions of their faith." A 17-year-old Eagle Scout from Ohio reportedly was denied the request to have a certificate read, "This flag was flown in honor of Marcel Larochelle, my grandfather, for his dedication and love of God, country and family."

Christian Conservatives Consider Bolting GOP for Third Party

CR Daily

Some of the nation's most politically influential conservative Christians, alarmed by the prospect of a Republican presidential nominee who supports abortion rights, are talking about backing a third-party candidate. More than 40 Christian conservatives attended a weekend meeting in Salt Lake City to discuss the possibility, and planned more gatherings on how they should move forward, according to conservative activist Richard Viguerie. Other participants in the meeting included Focus on the Family founder Dr. James Dobson. But a spokesman for Focus on the Family Action says Dobson and others at the meeting did not commit to supporting a third party and spoke out against the idea.

ACLJ Poised to Take Utah Cases to Supreme Court to Protect Nation's Heritage Displayed in Cities and States Across America

CR Daily

Washington, DC -- The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), specializing in constitutional law, said today it will ask the Supreme Court of the United States to take two Utah cases that could force local governments across the country to remove existing displays, including long-standing patriotic and historical displays, the result of local governments being compelled to post privately owned monuments or displays from any group about anything. On August 24th, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit rejected a request for the full appeals court to rehear the cases involving challenges in Duchesne and Pleasant Grove, Utah where a three-judge panel earlier ruled that a group called Summum could erect its Seven Aphorisms monument in the city parks because the cities display monuments of the Ten Commandments which were donated decades ago by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. “This is a very troubling decision that left standing could alter the landscape of America’s cities and towns by forcing local governments to remove long-standing patriotic, religious, and historical displays in order to comply with a twisted interpretation of the First Amendment,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ which is representing the two Utah cities. “This is a case that turns free speech and equal access on its head and ultimately would compel local governments to display privately-owned monuments of any kind, a move that is not only wrong but unconstitutional. This case has very serious ramifications for the entire nation. In addition to pressuring local and state governments to remove any vestige of our religious heritage, like the Ten Commandments, this flawed legal analysis would likely result in the removal of displays and monuments celebrating America’s culture and heritage. It’s a significant issue that must be addressed by the Supreme Court.”

Appeals Court Upholds Ban on Classroom Handout of Bibles

CR Daily

A federal appeals court has upheld a lower court ruling that prohibits the classroom distribution of Bibles to children in a public school. At issue was a long-held practice at South Iron Elementary School in Annapolis, Missouri, in which Gideons International representatives visited fifth-grade classrooms and gave away Bibles. A federal judge issued a temporary injunction, and a three-judge panel has upheld his ruling. But Mathew Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, which represented the school district, says the ruling concerns a practice no longer in place. He says the district's current policy allows people or groups to distribute literature -- with approval from the district -- before or after school or during lunch break, but not in the classrooms. Staver says the new policy is open to religious groups beyond the Gideons and is the subject of a pending ruling at the district court level.

Judge Sides with State in Battle Over Religious License Plate

CR Daily

A man who wants a Biblical reference on his vanity license plate has been dealt another setback in his legal fight with the state of Vermont. A judge says the Department of Motor Vehicles "has the right to prohibit religious messages on license plates provided it does not discriminate based on the particular message or viewpoint." Shawn Byrne wants a license plate that reads "JN36TN" -- shorthand for John 3:16, a Bible passage that reads: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

N.J. Ministry Sues to Prevent State from Forcing Church to Violate Religious Beliefs

CR Daily

The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of the United Methodist Church filed a federal lawsuit Saturday against New Jersey officials. The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights has threatened to prosecute the Camp Meeting Association for adhering to its deeply held religious beliefs. State officials launched an investigation after the Christian organization refused to allow a same-sex civil union ceremony at one of its worship facilities.

3 Killed in Mo. Church Shooting

Breitbart.com

NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) - A gunman opened fire in the sanctuary of a southwest Missouri church Sunday, killing a pastor and two worshippers and wounding several others, authorities said. One of the victims was the Rev. Kernal Rehobson, 44, who led the local congregation of predominantly Micronesian worshippers holding the service at the First Congregational Church, police said. The other two victims were male members of the congregation, who were "what we would call deacons," said Dave McCracken, Neosho police chief. Their names were not released because relatives were still being notified.

Senate could vote on the "hate crimes" bill as early as today

AFA

The Senate will be voting, as early as today, on S.1105, the so-called "hate crimes" bill. Under S.1105, acts of crime committed against members of certain protected classes - including those who identify themselves by their "actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity" - would warrant more intense prosecution and greater penalties than the very same acts committed against heterosexuals. It would establish homosexuals as a special class of people and give them special rights.

Hindu Prayer in Senate Disrupted

CR Daily

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Hindu clergyman made history Thursday by offering the Senate's morning prayer, but only after police officers removed three shouting protesters from the visitors' gallery. Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple in Reno, Nev., gave the brief prayer that opens each day's Senate session. As he stood at the chamber's podium in a bright orange and burgundy robe, two women and a man began shouting "this is an abomination" and other complaints from the gallery. Police officers quickly arrested them and charged them disrupting Congress, a misdemeanor. The male protester told an AP reporter, "we are Christians and patriots" before police handcuffed them and led them away. For several days, the Mississippi-based American Family Association has urged its members to object to the prayer because Zed would be "seeking the invocation of a non-monotheistic god." Zed, the first Hindu to offer the Senate prayer, began: "We meditate on the transcendental glory of the Deity Supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven. May He stimulate and illuminate our minds." As the Senate prepared for another day of debate over the Iraq war, Zed closed with, "Peace, peace, peace be unto all." Zed, who was born in India, was invited by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Speaking in the chamber shortly after the prayer, Reid defended the choice and linked it to the war debate. "If people have any misunderstanding about Indians and Hindus," Reid said, "all they have to do is think of Gandhi," a man "who gave his life for peace." "I think it speaks well of our country that someone representing the faith of about a billion people comes here and can speak in communication with our heavenly Father regarding peace," said Reid, a Mormon and sharp critic of President Bush's Iraq policies. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said the protest "shows the intolerance of many religious right activists. They say they want more religion in the public square, but it's clear they mean only their religion." Capitol police identified the protesters as Ante Nedlko Pavkovic, Katherine Lynn Pavkovic and Christan Renee Sugar. Their ages and hometowns were not available.

Two Supreme Court Decisions Are Victories for Faith-Based Groups

CR Daily

In a decision issued by the Supreme Court prior to a summer recess, the court ruled in a 5-4 decision that taxpayers cannot challenge a White House initiative that helps religious charities receive federal funds. The case of Hein v. Freedom From Religion Foundation is a “victory for President Bush’s faith-based imitative,” said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). According to Sekulow, in the Hein case, taxpayers challenged a federal faith-based program in Wisconsin. The court in Wisconsin dismissed the case ruling the taxpayers had no standing, as there was no federal grant at stake. However, a federal appeals court reinstated the ruling and the government then appealed to the Supreme Court. Sekulow, whose ACLJ filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the government, pointed out that “no federal taxpayer suits are allowed in any other context aside from Establishment Clause suit challenging federal spending.

Does Jesus Have a Place at High School Graduation?

ABC News

Mosques awarded Homeland Security grants

WorldNetDaily

While the European Union investigates mosques for ties to Islamic terrorism, the U.S. government is giving mosques security grants that are designed to protect churches, synagogues and other nonprofit groups from Islamic terror. Most recently, the Islamic Society of Baltimore landed a $15,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to upgrade security at its Maryland mosque. The Council on American-Islamic Relations since April has been urging leaders of mosques and Islamic schools across the nation to apply for the DHS grants, even though the agency's program was set up to help protect nonprofit facilities that are at high risk for attacks by Islamic terrorists.
