Federal judge rules against forced contraceptive sales

A federal judge says Washington state may not require pharmacies to sell Plan B or other emergency contraceptives in the face of religious objections by druggists.
U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton in Tacoma issued his decision Wednesday. He said the state's real goal in adopting its rule was not to promote timely access to Plan B and other medicine, but to infringe on the religious freedom of pharmacists who believe that life begins at conception.
Washington's rule requires pharmacies to sell any drug that's in demand, with some exceptions for business reasons. The judge said that if the state allows exceptions for non-religious reasons, it must allow religious or moral exceptions as well.

Conservatives Unite in Opposing Obama’s Assault on Religious Liberty

A sweeping alliance of fiscal, social and national security conservatives and leaders of the Tea Party movement came together on Monday to denounce the attack that President Barack Obama has launched on the free exercise of religion by ordering virtually all Americans to buy health insurance plans that pay for sterilizations, contraceptives and abortifacients even if doing so forces them to act against their consciences and the teachings of their faith.
The conservatives called for Obama’s mandate to be fully and unconditionally repealed.

Problematic ban for San Francisco's Jews

One California city's initiative that would ban circumcision may make it to the ballot in November.
Proponents of the effort to end circumcision in San Francisco collected more signatures than the required 7,168 to place the measure on the ballot. Petitions were sent to the San Francisco Department of Elections at the end of April, but the initiative is expected to be challenged by Jewish groups in the region.
"I understand that people, if they misunderstand it or they look at it very superficially, I understand that it would upset them," admits StandWithUs CEO and co-founder Roz Rothstein. "It is a ritual that causes pain and does make a child bleed; it's the ritual of circumcision."
If passed, the measure would ban circumcisions on males under the age of 18 and impose a $1,000 fine or a prison sentence on those who do not comply. The law would, however, permit some exceptions for medical reasons, but not for religious reasons. So Rothstein believes it will stifle religious freedom.

Flap over feds funding Arabic culture curriculum
A pro-family attorney in The Lone Star State says Washington bureaucrats are "meddling" in local education by "forcing" schools to teach students about the Arabic culture.
Parents in a North Texas school district are upset that they were not notified until after the fact about a plan to require all students in a couple of schools to learn Arabic culture. Officials with the Mansfield Independent School District apologized to outraged parents at a recent meeting for not informing them of a mandatory curriculum change at Kenneth Davis Elementary School and Cross Timbers Intermediate School.
Mansfield was one of five school districts in the country to receive the Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) Grant, which identifies Arabic as a "language of the future." The plan reportedly involves embedding Arabic culture in all facets of school activities, from discussing the Arabic roots of the word "algebra" to serving a Middle Eastern dessert at a class party. The Mansfield classes are part of a five-year, $1.3 million federal grant.
According to Shackelford, federal bureaucrats are inserting themselves into an arena best left to local decision-makers.
School officials, who deflected concerns that Arabic culture cannot be taught without including discussion of Islam, say the program is on indefinite hold while they start over -- this time involving parents. But Shackelford remains skeptical about what the curriculum will look like.

'Separation of church and state' strikes again

Two women have filed suit against a California school district because the scripture-bearing bricks they purchased to contribute to a high school campus sidewalk path would not be included in the project.
The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) filed the lawsuit against the Desert Sands Unified School District Board of Education on behalf of Lou Ann Hart and Sheryl Caronna, who bought the brick pavers through a school-directed fundraiser. While other pavers with inspirational, commemorative and tributary messages were installed on the walkway of the Palm Desert High School campus, the bricks with Bible verses were rejected by school officials.
David Cortman (Alliance Defense Fund)"They use that phrase that we hear all too often for trying to justify this, and it's the so-called 'separation of church and state,'" reports David Cortman, senior counsel for ADF. "But it doesn't apply. That clause was never meant to censor protected speech that happened to be religious. It just simply turns the Constitution on its head."
But he points out that some religious content was actually allowed, including a Hindu quote from Mahatma Gandhi.

Legislative prayer under scrutiny again

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) is asking the Iowa state legislature to stop praying before meetings and stop providing compensation to chaplains.
Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel and dean of Liberty University's Law School, decides the FFRF is singing a worn-out song in trying to intimidate the legislature to stop prayer. He notes a case in which the U.S. Supreme Court already upheld the practice against the Foundation's argument as it claimed government prayer in Nebraska represented an establishment of religion.
"The Supreme Court said, 'No, it's not.' In fact, the Supreme Court went back to history and indicated that the prayer at legislative assemblies was going on before the first Congress and at the moment the first Congress debated...drafted and authorized the First Amendment," Staver reports.

Nigeria Roiled Again by Muslim-Christian Clashes

The season of good will brought little to celebrate in a city straddling Nigeria’s religious fault line, where Muslim-Christian clashes continued Sunday following a series of deadly bombings on Christmas Eve.
Elsewhere in the country, police blamed a radical Islamic group nicknamed the “Nigerian Taliban” for attacks on two churches in the north which left six people dead, including a pastor.
The violence comes a year after Africa’s most populous country and the world’s eighth-largest oil exporter made international headlines over a failed attempt by a Nigerian student to bomb an aircraft approaching Detroit. Like that incident the latest flare-up again highlights the simmering conflict being fed by Islamist sentiment in the West African nation.

Pakistan’s Web Censorship Guidelines to Go Beyond ‘Blasphemy’

Stepping up efforts to prevent citizens from accessing “blasphemous” material on the Internet, Pakistani authorities have banned more than a dozen Web sites, are closely monitoring others, and reportedly are laying the groundwork to block any site viewed as meeting such vague criteria as harming “national sentiments.”
The new measures take to a new level Pakistan’s response to the dissemination online of information many Muslims regard as offensive. Beyond its borders, Pakistan is a leading force in the campaign at the United Nations – an effort led by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) -- to have such material outlawed across the globe.

Activists Claim Free Speech Victory As ‘Leaving Islam’ Ads Return to Buses

A public transit authority in Florida has reversed a decision to take down banner advertisements on buses that offer help to Muslims wanting to leave their faith. Activists are hailing the move as a victory for free speech and religious freedom.
Not only will the ten originally planned ads appear on Miami-Dade Transit buses in coming days, but an additional 20 ads will be run at no extra cost.

Indiana School Removes 'Allah' From Holiday Show After Protests

An elementary school in Indiana reportedly removed a mention of Allah in its holiday show after protests from a national conservative Christian group.
Lantern Road Elementary Principal Danielle Thompson told IndyStar.com that school officials in Fishers, Ind., attempted to teach inclusiveness through the second-grade program that included portions on Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Las Posadas and Kwanzaa.
Thompson said officials removed the phrase "Allah is God," however, after the American Family Association complained about the program on its electronic newsletter. The alteration was made because no other deities were named in the program.

Soldier alleges military pattern of Christian bias

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - An atheist soldier suing over prayers at military formations claims a larger pattern of religious discrimination exists in the military, citing attempts to convert Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan and an evangelical bias in a suicide prevention manual. The expanded lawsuit filed Monday by Spc. Dustin Chalker and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation in U.S. District Court in Kansas City also claims the military doesn't take complaints of religious discrimination seriously enough. The Defense Department has identified fewer than 50 complaints about alleged violations of religious freedoms during the past three years, with 1.4 million personnel in uniform, spokeswoman Eileen Lainez said. She declined to comment on a pending lawsuit but noted that the military has policies against endorsing any religious view. The revised lawsuit criticizes the Army's 2008 manual on suicide prevention, quoting it as promoting "religiosity" as a necessary part of prevention and describing "connectivity to the divine" as "fundamental." The lawsuit cites comments from a chaplain and a second soldier in Christian missionary publications about attempts to convert Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan, including the two soldiers' desire to distribute Bibles. The lawsuit also notes that in 2007, the Air Force sponsored "Team Faith," which performs motocross stunt shows to "lead extreme sports athletes to Christ." The original lawsuit filed in September alleged Chalker had to attend events at Fort Riley where Christian prayers were given. Foundation president Mikey Weinstein said Chalker tried to pursue his complaints within the Army but was told they were "unfounded."

Palin's Church Severely Damaged by Arson

ANCHORAGE, Dec. 13 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize Saturday if the fire was connected to "undeserved negative attention" from her campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to James Steele, the Central Mat-Su fire chief. He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson. Steele said he didn't know of any recent threats to the church, and authorities did not know whether Palin's connection to the church was relevant to the fire. "It's hard to say at this point. Everything is just speculation," he said. Pastor Larry Kroon declined to say whether the church had received any recent threats. Palin was not at the church at the time of the fire. She stopped by Saturday, and her spokesman Bill McAllister said in a statement that the governor told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the "undeserved negative attention" the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29. "Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good," McAllister said.

UNC libraries to forgo Christmas trees

CHAPEL HILL For as long as anyone can remember, Christmas trees adorned with lights and ornaments have greeted holiday season visitors to UNC Chapel Hill's two main libraries. Not this year. The trees, which have stood in the lobby areas of Wilson and Davis libraries each December, were kept in storage this year at the behest of Sarah Michalak, the associate provost for university libraries. Michalak's decision followed several years of queries and complaints from library employees and patrons bothered by the Christian display, Michalak said this week. Michalak said that banishing the Christmas displays was not an easy decision but that she asked around to library colleagues at Duke, N.C. State and elsewhere and found no other one where Christmas trees were displayed.

Calif. Supreme Court to take up gay marriage ban

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California's highest court has agreed to hear legal challenges to a new ban on gay marriage, but is refusing to allow gay couples to resume marrying until it rules. The California Supreme Court on Wednesday accepted three lawsuits seeking to overturn Proposition 8. The amendment passed this month with 52 percent of the vote. The court did not elaborate on its decision. All three cases claim the ban abridges the civil rights of a vulnerable minority group. They argue that voters alone did not have the authority to enact such a significant constitutional change.

BEIJING | President Bush continued his Olympics juggling act on Sunday, settling for a pointed remark in public to push for wider religious freedom in China and raising further political concerns privately with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Standing on the rain-splattered steps of the state-sanctioned Beijing Kuanjie Protestant Christian Church after attending an early morning service, Mr. Bush said it was "a joy and a privilege" to worship in the Chinese capital, as he did in 2005. "It just goes to show that God is universal. No state, man or woman should fear the influence of loving religion," he declared, alluding to the strict controls the Communist Party imposes on religion, while taking care not to embarrass his hosts - or the church pastor he encircled with his arm - with explicit criticism. Poll: Religious Voters More Likely To Support McCain

The two-thirds of Americans who agree that "religion is an important part of their daily life" are slightly more likely to support Sen. John McCain for president, according to a Gallup Poll released yesterday. Bishop Janice Hollis of Covenant International Fellowship and a member of the Pennsylvania Pastors Network (PPN) had a different take on the poll's findings. "I believe that this is more out of racial pride than spiritual adherence for the simple reason that Obama has made his support known for abortion and same sex union, both of which are fundamentally opposed to the tenets of faith," she said. Bishop Hollis, who is African-American, said that she also believed the majority of black voters were not "100 percent" committed to Mr. Obama.

On the second day of a weeklong national tour to highlight his values, Barack Obama brought his message of faith to the battleground state of Ohio in an attempt to court modern evangelicals who are infusing their Christian worldview with issues of AIDs, poverty, global warming, and other issues of social justice. "Now, I know there are some who bristle at the notion that faith has a place in the public square," Mr. Obama said yesterday. "But the fact is leaders in both parties have recognized the value of a partnership between the White House and faith-based groups." A day after defending his patriotism in Independence, Mo., Mr. Obama traveled to Zanesville, Ohio to speak to the Eastside Community Ministry, a program that provides food, shelter and youth services to those in need. Mr. Obama used the speech to unveil a proposal to get more religious charities involved in solving the many problems facing the nation.
