Calif. Supreme Court to take up gay marriage ban

My Way News

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California's highest court has agreed to hear legal challenges to a new ban on gay marriage, but is refusing to allow gay couples to resume marrying until it rules. The California Supreme Court on Wednesday accepted three lawsuits seeking to overturn Proposition 8. The amendment passed this month with 52 percent of the vote. The court did not elaborate on its decision. All three cases claim the ban abridges the civil rights of a vulnerable minority group. They argue that voters alone did not have the authority to enact such a significant constitutional change.

Bush visits Beijing church, urges freedom

The Washington Times

BEIJING | President Bush continued his Olympics juggling act on Sunday, settling for a pointed remark in public to push for wider religious freedom in China and raising further political concerns privately with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Standing on the rain-splattered steps of the state-sanctioned Beijing Kuanjie Protestant Christian Church after attending an early morning service, Mr. Bush said it was "a joy and a privilege" to worship in the Chinese capital, as he did in 2005. "It just goes to show that God is universal. No state, man or woman should fear the influence of loving religion," he declared, alluding to the strict controls the Communist Party imposes on religion, while taking care not to embarrass his hosts - or the church pastor he encircled with his arm - with explicit criticism. 'JOY': President Bush speaks at the state-sanctioned Beijing Kuanjie Protestant Christian Church on Sunday. He later raised the issue of human rights abuses behind closed doors with Chinese President Hu Jintao. (Associated Press)

Poll: Religious Voters More Likely To Support McCain

The Bulletin

The two-thirds of Americans who agree that "religion is an important part of their daily life" are slightly more likely to support Sen. John McCain for president, according to a Gallup Poll released yesterday. Bishop Janice Hollis of Covenant International Fellowship and a member of the Pennsylvania Pastors Network (PPN) had a different take on the poll's findings. "I believe that this is more out of racial pride than spiritual adherence for the simple reason that Obama has made his support known for abortion and same sex union, both of which are fundamentally opposed to the tenets of faith," she said. Bishop Hollis, who is African-American, said that she also believed the majority of black voters were not "100 percent" committed to Mr. Obama.

Obama Targets The Faithful

The Bulletin

On the second day of a weeklong national tour to highlight his values, Barack Obama brought his message of faith to the battleground state of Ohio in an attempt to court modern evangelicals who are infusing their Christian worldview with issues of AIDs, poverty, global warming, and other issues of social justice. "Now, I know there are some who bristle at the notion that faith has a place in the public square," Mr. Obama said yesterday. "But the fact is leaders in both parties have recognized the value of a partnership between the White House and faith-based groups." A day after defending his patriotism in Independence, Mo., Mr. Obama traveled to Zanesville, Ohio to speak to the Eastside Community Ministry, a program that provides food, shelter and youth services to those in need. Mr. Obama used the speech to unveil a proposal to get more religious charities involved in solving the many problems facing the nation.

Survey: More have dropped dogma for spirituality in U.S.

USA Today

Religion today in the USA is a salad bar where people heap on upbeat beliefs they like and often leave the veggies — like strict doctrines — behind. There are so many ways of seeing God, public policy expert Barry Kosmin says, that "the highest authority is now the lowest common denominator." And the wide-ranging ways people construct their spiritual lives could make the so-called religious vote unpredictable in the 2008 elections.

Prospect of gay Lutheran bishop divides Germans

Yahoo News

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany could elect its first openly gay Lutheran bishop next month, a move conservatives say would alienate many Christians and open divisions in the Church. The July 12 election brings to Germany the question of gay clergy and same-sex unions which has caused rifts in several countries and faiths, including the Anglican community. Horst Gorski, a senior cleric from Hamburg, is standing for the post of bishop of Schleswig in northern Germany against Gerhard Ulrich, a senior cleric from the Schleswig area. The incumbent bishop is retiring in September. Gorski is a widely respected theologian and he helped set up a centre for gay and lesbian Lutheran pastors. His open homosexuality angers some Lutheran conservatives who argue his election as bishop would leave many Christians with no spiritual home.

Former screen siren Bardot convicted in race case

Yahoo News

PARIS - Brigitte Bardot was convicted Tuesday of provoking discrimination and racial hatred for writing that Muslims are destroying France. A Paris court also handed down a $23,325 fine against the former screen siren and animal rights campaigner. The court also ordered Bardot to pay $1,555 in damages to MRAP. Bardot's lawyer, Francois-Xavier Kelidjian, said he would talk to her about the possibility of an appeal. A leading French anti-racism group known as MRAP filed a lawsuit last year over a letter she sent to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. The remarks were published in her foundation's quarterly journal. In the December 2006 letter to Sarkozy, now the president, Bardot said France is "tired of being led by the nose by this population that is destroying us, destroying our country by imposing its acts." Bardot, 73, was referring to the Muslim feast of Aid el-Kebir, celebrated by slaughtering sheep. French anti-racism laws prevent inciting hatred and discrimination on racial or religious or racial grounds. Bardot had been convicted four times previously for inciting racial hatred.

Practising Muslims 'will outnumber Christians by 2035'

The Telegraph UK

By 2035, there will be about 1.96 million active Muslims in Britain, compared with 1.63 million church-going Christians, according to calculations by Christian Research, a think- tank. The figures are published in the latest in a series of reports entitled Religious Trends. The think-tank has warned that 4,000 churches could close by 2020 if congregations continue to shrink at current rates.

Manifesto aims to make 'evangelical' a less-political term

USA Today

An "evangelical manifesto" being released today by a group of Christian scholars and theologians is expected to try to take back the term "evangelical" from politics and return it to its theological roots. "Evangelical" has been widely used to refer to Christians who have conservative political views, but the Evangelical Theological Society requires members to agree on just two points: inerrancy of Scripture, and belief in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as "separate but equal in attributes and glory" and essential for salvation.

McCain seeks to quash fears on the right

Financial Times

John McCain promised on Tuesday to nominate conservative judges to the Supreme Court and for other judicial vacancies, seeking to quash doubts among some Republicans about his conservative credentials. The Republican presidential candidate said he would use John Roberts and Samuel Alito, who were appointed to the Supreme Court by President George W. Bush, as his “model” when choosing nominees.

Clothing and gestures will be scrutinized at Olympics

Yahoo News

DENVER - With the Beijing Games less than 100 days away, the International Olympic Committee clarified its protest rules Monday, saying that athletes' external appearance, clothing and gestures would be scrutinized in China. The IOC sent a six-point letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, to the national Olympic federations in response to their request for interpretations of Rule 51.3 of the Olympic charter. That rule states "no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."

Obama defends response to Wright

Politico

It was the kind of Sunday morning tailor-made for a DVR. Just two days before the crucial Indiana and North Carolina primaries, Sen. Barack Obama sat for an hourlong interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” dominated by questions about his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, meanwhile, appeared in a wide-ranging town hall forum in Indiana on ABC’s “This Week.” On NBC, Obama (D-Ill.) admitted that the controversy surrounding Wright “distracted” his campaign. Instead of talking about the economy, the Iraq war and other pressing issues, “we spent a lot of time talking about Rev. Wright. ... It wasn’t welcome.”

After Troubled Tour, Torch in China

The New York TImes

The Olympic torch returned to China on Wednesday in preparation for its first relay on Chinese soil after a troubled worldwide tour. There were no reports of protests but several anti-China activists had already been deported ahead of the torch’s arrival. The torch’s relay through Hong Kong will take place on Friday. Its arrival in Hong Kong has been depicted as part of a broader struggle over Hong Kong’s evolving role as an autonomous territory of China. It arrived from Vietnam at Hong Kong airport, where it was greeted by a marching band and flag-waving children dressed in red and white tracksuits, The Associated Press reported. The torch was then taken to a welcoming ceremony at a cultural center.

Florida lawmakers debate offering a Christian license plate

Breitbart.Com

MIAMI (AP) - Florida drivers can order more than 100 specialty license plates celebrating everything from manatees to the Miami Heat, but one now under consideration would be the first in the nation to explicitly promote a specific religion. The Florida Legislature is considering a specialty plate with a design that includes a Christian cross, a stained-glass window and the words "I Believe."

Pope blesses ground zero in NYC, prays for peace

My Way News

NEW YORK (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI began the final day of his American journey by blessing the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and pleading with God to bring "peace to our violent world." The visit by Benedict to ground zero was a poignant moment in a trip marked by unexpectedly festive crowds anxious to see the former academic who for three years has led the world's Roman Catholics. Benedict was driven in the popemobile part-way down a ramp now used mostly by construction trucks to a spot by the north tower's footprint. He walked the final steps, knelt in silent prayer for a few moments, then rose to light a memorial candle. Addressing a group that including survivors, clergy and public officials, he acknowledged the many faiths of the victims at the "scene of incredible violence and pain."

After intimate meeting, pope turns to global audience

My Way News

WASHINGTON (AP) - After a dramatic three days in which he put the country's clergy sexual abuse scandal front and center, Pope Benedict XVI turned his attention Friday to the original purpose of his first U.S. visit as leader of the Roman Catholic Church. The pope, after an early morning flight from the nation's capital to New York City, will deliver an address to the General Assembly of the United Nations, taking his first opportunity to truly talk globally. The setting will contrast dramatically with the intimacy of a meeting Thursday, in which he prayed with weeping victims of childhood sexual abuse by priests.

High court considers religous display rules

USA Today

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court agreed Monday to look at when cities can keep certain religious displays off public grounds, revisiting an enduring free speech issue in a case brought by the unconventional Summum faith. The Summum church wants to erect a monument of its "seven aphorisms" near a Ten Commandments monument in a Utah park. Government regulation of expressive displays on public grounds has become one of the most controversial areas of the law. The questions test the constitutional guarantee of free speech and, often, the separation of church and state.

Muslims more numerous than Catholics: Vatican

Reuters United Kingdom

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Islam has overtaken Roman Catholicism as the biggest single religious denomination in the world, the Vatican said on Sunday. Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who compiled the Vatican's newly-released 2008 yearbook of statistics, said Muslims made up 19.2 percent of the world's population and Catholics 17.4 percent. "For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have overtaken us," Formenti told Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano in an interview, saying the data referred to 2006. He said that if all Christian groups were considered, including Orthodox churches, Anglicans and Protestants, then Christians made up 33 percent of the world's population -- or about 2 billion people. The Vatican recently put the number of Catholics in the world at 1.13 billion people. It did not provide a figure for Muslims, generally estimated at around 1.3 billion. Formenti said that while the number of Catholics as a proportion of the world's population was fairly stable, the percentage of Muslims was growing because of higher birth rates.
