BEIRUT -- Christians are fleeing from Lebanon to escape the rise of radical Islam and growing fears that the trend will result in a Sunni-Shi'ite civil war, with minority Christians trapped in the middle.
In a poll to be published next month, nearly half of all Maronites, the largest Christian denomination in the country, said they were considering emigrating.
Of these, more than 100,000 have submitted visa applications to foreign embassies, according to the poll.

A synagogue on Chicago's North Side may have been the target of a hate crime after vandals spray-painted derogatory messages on the building early Saturday, police said.
Officers were called to the Ner Tamid Ezra-Habonin Congregation of North Town, at 2754 W. Rosemont Ave., on Saturday evening and found the front door spray-painted with offensive language, Officer John Mirabelli said.

AMMAN, Jordan — Iraqi sisters Nasrin and Rihab enjoyed a relatively peaceful life in Baghdad until the night almost a year ago when militiamen tortured and beheaded their only brother.
Then came threatening phone calls, said the sisters, both members of Iraq's small Christian community. And not long afterward, armed men broke into their home and beat them.
They "started hitting us, pulling our hair and pounding on my sister's stomach with their boots," wailed Nasrin, now 51, in an interview in their tiny apartment in Amman.

Zachariah Anani knows all too well the dangers of Islamic extremism: He embraced the ideology for several decades and found himself in the trenches of terrorist activities and a hatred that consumed his existence. But the seven men sitting in the front row of his Jan. 11 lecture in an Ontario church told a different tale: "Islam is tolerant," they said.
Anani challenged their assertion and asked one of the men to explain the penalty for Muslim conversion to Christianity. "It took three of them to admit it is death," Anani told WORLD. "So much for the tolerance."
