A group calling itself the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) says that when First Lady Michelle Obama created her anti-obesity "Let’s Move!" initiative, she unfairly singled out fat kids, turning them into targets.
Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Monday, NAAFA public relations director Peggy Howell said the First Lady “essentially gave permission to everyone to condemn the children with higher body weights.”
Howell called Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign “well-intentioned, but somewhat misdirected.”
“What I mean by ‘misdirected’ is that rather than educating and encouraging our nation to create healthy practices for all children, focusing on the health of all our children, children of higher body weight have been singled out and the focus of the campaign is on weight reduction and not on improving children’s health.

State and local education officials have been begging the federal government for relief from student testing mandates in the federal No Child Left Behind law, but school starts soon and Congress still hasn't answered the call.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan says he will announce a new waiver system Monday to give schools a break.
The plan to offer waivers to all 50 states, as long as they meet other school reform requirements, comes at the request of President Barack Obama, Duncan said. More details on the waivers will come in September, he said.
The goal of the No Child Left Behind law is to have every student proficient in math and reading by 2014. States have been required to bring more students up to the math and reading standards each year, based on tests that usually take place each spring. The step-by-step ramping up of the 9-year-old law has caused heartburn in states and most school districts, because more and more schools are labeled as failures as too few of their students meet testing goals.

One California charter school will offer a program that teaches the language and culture of an area in Northern India and Pakistan, but one school official thinks immigrants need to understand that they have "left their homeland."
The Sacramento Valley Charter School, which is funded by the public, will be the first to offer the teachings of Punjab. The school will be situated near a Sikh temple and will offer kindergarten through sixth-grade classes, but it hopes to include seventh and eighth grade within the next several years.
Even though he believes ethnic groups should hold on to their heritage, James Na, president of the Chino Valley Unified School District, says: "They must also understand that they have left their homeland in order to seek...a better future and opportunities here [in] the United States."
"Hence, by limiting Indian Punjab youth from obtaining a traditional, well-rounded American education experience, it can hinder or even sabotage the bright future of their very own children's success here in America," he warns.
Teachers argue that creating schools for a specific ethnic group may make the school unavailable to students of other races. So Na concludes, "It should be a private school, and I believe a true immigrant's success story in America is about becoming an asset to this nation built with pilgrim heritage, coupled with unwavering pioneer experience."

A California university hosted a forum last week aimed at protecting ethnic studies on college campuses.
In the months since an Arizona law went into effect threatening to cut state funding to school districts that designed courses promoting certain ethnic groups, many Arizona teachers and students have been migrating through California schools to save ethnic studies in The Golden State.
On Wednesday, the "La Raza Tour: Save Ethnic Studies" landed at California State University - Fullerton, where students were informed of the importance of preserving Mexican-American studies. But Diane Lenning of Lenning School Watch tells OneNewsNow that schools cannot abandon the essential teachings of American history in order to accommodate ethnic studies.
Diane Lenning (Lenning School Watch)"I cannot stress enough how important it is to know the United States Constitution, your state Constitution, and our tri-level legal system," Lenning shares.

In California, a bill that will mandate public school textbooks to be rewritten to contain information about the lesbian, "gay," bisexual and transgender (LGBT) movement will go before lawmakers this month.
On March 23, the first hearing and vote for Senate Bill 48, proposed by homosexual Senator Mark Leno, will proceed. Pro-family activists are urging lawmakers to vote against the bill, which would encourage open discussion on the LGBT lifestyle in classrooms of all ages. Under S.B. 48, textbooks must highlight key LGBT figures who were contributors to the history of the United States, as well as details about the homosexual movement.
Dr. Scott Lively, president of Defend the Family International, tells OneNewsNow that now is the time for Christians to voice their concern.
"And politics is a part of every church, it's part of every family -- and frankly, the reason we're suffering the consequences that we are is because the church has abdicated its responsibilities to be stewards of civil society."

A pro-family attorney in The Lone Star State says Washington bureaucrats are "meddling" in local education by "forcing" schools to teach students about the Arabic culture.
Parents in a North Texas school district are upset that they were not notified until after the fact about a plan to require all students in a couple of schools to learn Arabic culture. Officials with the Mansfield Independent School District apologized to outraged parents at a recent meeting for not informing them of a mandatory curriculum change at Kenneth Davis Elementary School and Cross Timbers Intermediate School.
Mansfield was one of five school districts in the country to receive the Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) Grant, which identifies Arabic as a "language of the future." The plan reportedly involves embedding Arabic culture in all facets of school activities, from discussing the Arabic roots of the word "algebra" to serving a Middle Eastern dessert at a class party. The Mansfield classes are part of a five-year, $1.3 million federal grant.
According to Shackelford, federal bureaucrats are inserting themselves into an arena best left to local decision-makers.
School officials, who deflected concerns that Arabic culture cannot be taught without including discussion of Islam, say the program is on indefinite hold while they start over -- this time involving parents. But Shackelford remains skeptical about what the curriculum will look like.

A terrorism expert says textbook publishers are allowing pro-Islamic consultants to have influence over the content of what is taught in America's schools.
The terrorism expert tells OneNewsNow that a student at that academy was arrested for seeking to assassinate former President George W. Bush. Even so, a former teacher at that same school is counseling the publishers of Across the Centuries (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), a 558-page textbook used in middle schools that contains 55 pages on Islam, less than ten pages on Christianity, and several pages on the Byzantine Empire. (See editor's note below)
"The chapter on Islam accounts for ten percent of the text, while Christianity and Judaism are almost entirely absent," Gabriel points out. "This book is taught in every single public school across the United States, in every state and city."

The University of Notre Dame has a tradition of inviting new presidents to speak at graduation. But this year's selection of President Barack Obama has been met by a barrage of criticism that has left some students fearing their commencement ceremony will turn into a circus.
Many Catholics are angered by Obama's planned appearance at the May 17 ceremony because of his decisions to provide federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and international family planning groups that provide abortions or educate about the procedure.
..."People are definitely entitled to their outrage, but I think the main thing is to see that it's an honor to have the president of the United States come to speak here whether you agree with him or not," said Katie Woodward, a political science junior from Philadelphia.
Justin Mack, a senior film major from Dallas, agreed.
"I didn't vote for him and there are a lot of things I don't agree with him or support. But I feel like for this event people need to put that aside," said Mack, a senior film major from Dallas. "My hope is that doesn't distract too much from what the weekend is about, which is the graduation."
But the distractions have been mounting, including sharply worded letters from two bishops. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of the Phoenix Diocese on Wednesday called Obama's selection a "public act of disobedience" and "a grave mistake." On Tuesday, Bishop John D'Arcy of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese, which includes Notre Dame, said he would not attend the ceremony because of Obama's policies.

A public school's "gender-bender" cross-dressing event, where boys were supposed to dress as girls and girls as boys, has prompted at least dozens, perhaps hundreds, of students to flee the tax-supported institutions in Iowa.
Many of the parents apparently are members of the Christ Apostolic Temple in Des Moines, which teaches a biblically based doctrine of rejecting the world's values.
"Christ Apostolic Temple Inc. Fellowship ... is a Bible-based organization that believes one must 'come out from among them and be ye separate.' (2 Cor. 6:14-17)," the organization's website says.
That apparently includes cross-dressing, an event which has found sponsorship in other arenas from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, which has promoted a school lesson plan for teaching boys and girls to cross-dress.
State officials in Des Moines confirmed to WND that at least 80 children whose parents were alarmed by the "Gender-Bender Day" during homecoming week at the city's East High School have moved their children from the various districts in the area into homeschooling plans. Several parents told WND that the number could be in the hundreds.

While the effort to adopt a mandatory diversity course has been successfully defeated on many college campuses, this threat to academic integrity is reappearing in the form of a “Community Engagement” program on campuses.
The Commission calls for a full-time faculty member to serve as the administrator, who would be responsible for creating the list of opportunities which are point-worthy. By selecting which classes are point-worthy and the number of points assigned to each, the administrator would be able to implement mandatory diversity courses through the backdoor.
This selection problem applies to activities as well. This week, for example, a student group at UVA held a workshop entitled the “Sexual Arts & Crafts Workshop.” The advertisement for the Workshop read, “Come learn about sexual health in a fun, creative way!
Is this a cultural event? Does this include work with the local community? Does this promote (gender) equity? A “Community Engagement” program administrator could easily make the argument that this Workshop qualifies.
Thus, by picking and choosing which activities are included in the “Community Engagement” program, universities are able to push their political agenda on students both inside and outside the classroom.

Today marks the beginning of “Islamo-Facism Awareness Week” on campus. The event, made famous by the flier controversy that captured the attention of the GW community, is sponsored by the conservative group Young America’s Foundation. In response, the GW chapter of the Muslim Students Association will conduct a “Peace, Not Prejudice” campaign. According to their Facebook group, "Peace, Not Prejudice" plans to “firmly meet free speech with free speech” and to “advance campus dialogue and provide a venue for constructive academic discourse.”
By reacting to the YAF’s events with a movement of their own, the MSA, in conjunction with other, co-sponsoring student organizations, is helping to raise the level of debate on GW’s campus rather than unnecessarily prolonging the firestorm over the fliers.
Despite many doubting the power and impact of activism on college campuses, the exchange of ideas at a university does matter. Especially at an institution like GW, where issues are magnified as campus sits just blocks west of the White House, it is important for students to keep discourse clean, honest, and intelligent.

Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.
The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
There are no national figures on how many middle schools, where most students range in age from 11 to 13, provide such services.

WorldNetDaily - Schwarzenegger signs law outlawing terms perceived as negative to 'gays'
"Mom and Dad" as well as "husband and wife" effectively have been banned from California schools under a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who with his signature also ordered public schools to allow boys to use girls restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa, if they choose.
"We are shocked and appalled that the governor has blatantly attacked traditional family values in California," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute.
"With this decision, Gov. Schwarzenegger has told parents that their values are irrelevant.
"Arnold Schwarzenegger has delivered young children into the hands of those who will introduce them to alternative sexual lifestyles," said Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families, which worked to defeat the plans. "This means children as young as five years old will be mentally molested in school classrooms.
"We're calling upon every California parent to pull their child out of California's public school system," Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families, told WND.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 — The Supreme Court on Wednesday let stand a ruling that the New York City school system must pay private school tuition for disabled children, even if the parents refuse to try public school programs first. But the justices are likely to take up the issue again soon, with nationwide implications.
The justices split, 4 to 4, in the case of Tom Freston, the former chief executive for Viacom, and his son Gilbert, with Justice Anthony M. Kennedy taking no part. The tie meant that a 2006 ruling in Mr. Freston’s favor by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in Manhattan, stands for now. But it has no effect outside the circuit, which covers New York State, Connecticut and Vermont.
The case has been closely watched by educators. Almost seven million students nationwide receive special-education services, with 71,000 educated in private schools at public expense, according to the federal Education Department. Usually, districts agree to pay for those services after conceding that they cannot provide suitable ones.

St. Lucie County Schools Superintendent Michael Lannon plans to recommend that the school board adopt a proposed sex education curriculum, with some modifications, and begin using it in the schools this year.
The proposed curriculum, called Get Real About AIDS, would be primarily for high school students, but aspects of it could be used in middle school, he said. His proposal calls for students to begin learning about diseases, such as HIV and AIDS, in seventh grade. Eighth-graders would be the first to learn about condoms, he said.
"The fact is students that age, in some cases, are having sex," he said.
The proposed curriculum has drawn fire from people who believe it promotes the use of contraceptives over abstinence and contains "graphic and sexually explicit material." They have particularly objected to in-class demonstrations of condoms and an exercise in which students purchase condoms at the drug store, an activity they dubbed the "condom field trip." The school district has received about 2,800 petitions from people opposed to it, and many people have spoken against it at school board meetings.

Parents shopping for school supplies probably haven't thought to include body armor on their lists, but after recent school shootings including April's Virginia Tech massacre, two companies are marketing armored backpacks and uniforms.
"Back in '99 following the Columbine shootings, me and my buddy Joe Curran — both of us are parents of two children — wondered if there was anything out there in the world to protect children in school if there was a shooting," Mike Pelonzi, co-inventor of My Child's Pack, a bulletproof backpack, told ABCNEWS.com.

WASHINGTON, June 28 — With competing blocs of justices claiming the mantle of Brown v. Board of Education, a bitterly divided Supreme Court declared Thursday that public school systems cannot seek to achieve or maintain integration through measures that take explicit account of a student’s race.
