U.S. probes Google deal on DoubleClick

WASHINGTON, May 28 (UPI) -- The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into Google's plan to purchase DoubleClick Inc. for $3.1 billion, The New York Times said. Citing an industry executive who had been briefed on the FTC's preliminary antitrust investigation, the newspaper said the inquiry was opened last week after it was determined that the commission, rather than the Justice Department, should conduct the review. An FTC spokesman Monday told the newspaper the commission does not comment on pending inquiries.

Should the FCC Curb TV Violence?

In a long-awaited report, the Federal Communications Commission recently called on Congress to draft tougher regulations on violent television programming. The report, which lawmakers requested three years ago, concluded that current efforts to protect children from violent content -- the V-chip blocking technology and a voluntary rating system -- are not effective.

Bush to pressure Senate to revive U.N. sea treaty

WASHINGTON – In a move that has already angered some of his most ardent supporters, President Bush has asked the Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate to revive a proposal for ratification of the United Nation's Law of the Sea Treaty, an international agreement defeated two years ago by Republican leadership in the upper house. Critics say ratification would compromise U.S. sovereignty and place 70 percent of the Earth's surface under the control of the U.N. – even providing for a "tax" that would be paid directly to the international body by companies mining in the world's oceans.

House Votes To Expand Hate Crimes Law

(AP) Just hours after the White House issued a veto threat Thursday, the House voted to add gender and sexual orientation to the categories covered by federal hate crimes law. The House legislation, passed 237-180, also makes it easier for federal law enforcement to take part in or assist local prosecutions involving bias-motivated attacks. Similar legislation is also moving through the Senate, setting the stage for another veto showdown with President Bush.

Imus firing back at CBS

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former radio talk show host Don Imus has hired one of the country's top trial lawyers to sue CBS Radio following his dismissal last month for making racial and sexual on-air comments about members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team. Attorney Martin Garbus told CNN Wednesday that he has agreed to represent Imus in a wrongful breach of contract suit against his former employer. Garbus would not disclose when he was retained by Imus but said he plans to file an action against CBS in the near future. Calls made to Imus by CNN were not returned.

Will Bush veto 'thought police'?

The nation's largest public policy women's group is asking President Bush to commit to a veto of a "hate crimes" plan that, as WND has reported, opponents fear would target Christians and be used to demolish both freedom of speech and religion in the United States. "Last week the House Judiciary Committee, egged on by radical homosexual groups, passed what can only be called a Thought Crimes bill," said former White House insider Chuck Colson in his Breakpoint commentary. "It's called the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. But this bill is not about hate. It's not even about crime. It's about outlawing peaceful speech – speech that asserts that homosexual behavior is morally wrong."

Police to Review Clash at LA Rally

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police Chief William J. Bratton on Wednesday promised an investigation into the conduct of police who dispersed an immigration rally, after videos captured officers using force with reporters and firing rubber bullets into crowds. Bratton said officers fired 240 "nonlethal" rounds to clear MacArthur Park late Tuesday. News images showed police hitting a television cameraman to the ground, shoving people who were walking away from officers and injuries from the rubber bullets, including a Hispanic man with welts on his abdomen and back. Lines of officers moved through the park firing the rubber rounds. "The events of yesterday, with all (the training) that we do, should not have occurred," Bratton said at a tense news conference. "We should not be engaged in attacks on the media."

Conservative Black Pastors Fight Bill on Hate Crimes

A coalition of conservative African American pastors is lobbying Congress to vote against a bill that would extend federal hate-crimes laws to cover gays, saying they fear it would prevent them from preaching against homosexuality. Several pastors last week urged House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), a sponsor of the bill, and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote against the proposed Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Google and MySpace Expanding in China

Google and MySpace are increasing their efforts to establish themselves in China, the second-largest Internet market behind the United States. Google Inc., No. 2 in China's Web search market, is giving its local managers more autonomy and investing more in China in an effort to make up for its late entry and take the lead in the industry, Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt said Friday. "We are catching up. Our investment is working and we will eventually be the leader," he told reporters.

Don Imus' Longtime Producer Fired

NEW YORK — The longtime producer for Don Imus' syndicated radio show joined his boss on the unemployment line one week after the disgraced broadcaster was booted from the airwaves for racist and sexist comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team. Bernard McGuirk, who joined the "Imus in the Morning Show" as producer in 1987, was let go late Thursday by WFAN-AM for his role in the ugly incident, CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said Friday. CBS Inc. (CBS), the parent company for WFAN, pulled Imus off the air on April 12.

Google, Utah on Collision Course Over Web 'Keywords'

Google "Utah Legislature" and "lawsuit" and you might soon find yourself reading about, well, Google. The world's largest Internet search engine says a new state law that curbs keyword-triggered advertising is unconstitutional and probably will be challenged in court. And although the company didn't promise to be the plaintiff, its spokesman pledged to work with other Internet companies to "educate officials in Utah about the numerous consequences" of the legislation.

Pressure Groups Shaping Press Coverage Exposed

ABC News reporter Bill Blakemore said he doesn't "like the word 'balance' much at all" when it comes to global warming. "After extensive searches, ABC News has found no (scientific) debate" on whether the planet is warming as a result of man's activity, he said in his network report Aug. 30. But just how extensive was that search? A few months later, in an appearance before the Society for Environmental Journalists, Blakemore said there is no need for reporters to seek balance in stories about the topic of global warming. "It was very lazy of us for 10 years when we were asked for balance from the spinners," he said. "We just gave up and said, 'OK, OK – I will put the other side on; OK, are you happy now?' And it saves us from the trouble of having to check out the fact that these other sides were the proverbial flat earth society." Blakemore, says a new book by Joseph Farah, founder of WND and a former editor in chief of major-market daily newspapers, is an example the organized social and political activists who have invaded America's newsrooms, subverting long-established guidelines and ethics codes calling for accuracy, fairness, balance and the avoidance of conflict of interest in journalism. "If you really want to understand how America's great and unique institution of a free press has been deliberately undermined by radical activists masquerading as journalists, backed by big business and encouraged by big government, you have to examine this phenomenon," says Farah, author of "Stop the Presses: The Inside Story of the New Media Revolution," hitting the nation's bookstores for official release today. The Society for Environmental Journalists is one of the "activist pressure groups" Farah cites as working within the press to promote a political agenda under the guise of reporting the news. The agenda for the next national conference, to be held in Stanford, Calif., in September, doesn't leave much doubt about where the organization stands on global warming. Judge rules in favor of ADF attorneys in government workplace free speech case

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A federal judge ruled Friday in favor of Alliance Defense Fund attorneys representing an employee of the Defense Logistics Agency, a component of the Department of Defense. ADF attorneys filed suit in April 2005 after officials violated the employee’s free speech rights when they denied his request to post a flyer presenting a religious point of view on an employee bulletin board. “Of all the places that should respect the constitutional rights of employees, it’s the federal government. Christian speech is not second-class speech in a public workplace,” said ADF Senior Counsel Kevin Theriot. “Noting the prohibition on private, faith-based points of view, the court correctly ruled that this federal agency was engaging in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination.”

UK Regulations Barring Religious Schools from Teaching Against Homosexuality Approved

LONDON, March 22, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK's Sexual Orientation Regulations, that will make it illegal for Christian schools, services and businesses to operate according to their religious principles, passed its last hurdle last night in a vote in the House of Lords. A last minute attempt to defeat the legislation failed. A motion by Baroness O'Caithain that would have scrapped the Regulations on the grounds of anti-religious discrimination was voted down 168 votes to 122. The regulations will be implemented at the end of April.
