Supreme Court Likely to Overturn Part of DOMA

The U.S. Supreme Court appears more likely to overturn part of the Defense of Marriage Act after oral arguments in a case challenging the law's constitutionality.

The Court is "80% likely to strike down" DOMA because Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is expected to be the swing vote in the case, "suggests it violated states' rights," Scotusblog tweeted after Wednesday's oral arguments.

International Women’s Day Celebrants Ignore Abortion Killing Women

LifeNews.com

Today is International Women’s Day.

It’s also the end of a cold and snowy first week of the United Nations’ 57th Commission on the Status of Women at UN headquarters in New York City. The theme of this year’s Commission is “Elimination and Prevention of all Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls.” Unfortunately, the most radical of feminists have once again hijacked the commission and have turned it into an all too common exercise in misandry.

Newtown Received 175,000 Letters; Volunteers Handwriting Thank-You Notes

Newtown, Conn., received about 175,000 cards and letters and tens of thousands of gifts from church groups and others after December's Sandy Hook mass shooting. Volunteers are now working to preserve the mails and send handwritten thank-you notes to senders, even as officials Sunday distributed gifts to residents.

"It's incredible, incredible stuff," resident and volunteer Yolie Moreno told The Associated Press of the cards and letters received. "And I imagine everyone who sent something would like to know that it was held, read, touched, photographed and shared."

Media Outlets Ignore or Downplay Shooting at Pro-Life Office

LifeNews.com

Mainstream media outlets either ignored or downplayed the shooting at the Family Research Council yesterday. Tim Graham of the Media Research Center and Jill Stanek, a pro-life blogger, have compiled some of the “worst of” or “lack of” coverage.

From Tim Graham at Media Research Center:

ABC was the only broadcast network that offered a full story on the FRC office shooting on Wednesday night. They led with the story and gave it two and a half minutes.

Ohio ... November's big prize

OneNewsNow

The head of an Ohio-based political action committee says President Barack Obama's bus tour through Ohio is more evidence of how essential the Buckeye State is in winning the White House.

Obama's two-day, 250-mile "Betting on America" bus tour is taking him through several northern Ohio communities where he received strong support in 2008. The tour also includes stops in western Pennsylvania. Republicans are countering by dispatching Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty to some of the same towns along Obama's tour.

UK Internet activity 'to be monitored' under new laws

The Telegraph

Under legislation expected in next month's Queen's Speech, internet companies will be instructed to install hardware enabling GCHQ – the Government's electronic "listening" agency – to examine "on demand" any phone call made, text message and email sent, and website accessed in "real time", The Sunday Times reported.

A previous attempt to introduce a similar law was abandoned by the former Labour government in 2006 in the face of fierce opposition.

However ministers believe it is essential that the police and security services have access to such communications data in order to tackle terrorism and protect the public.

Sale of Philadelphia newspapers raises bias concerns

The Washington Times

Philadelphia’s two daily newspapers have long been accused of liberal bias, but critics say a group of potential buyers led by former Gov. Ed Rendell would turn the papers into mere mouthpieces of the Democratic Party in a 2012 swing state.

Mr. Rendell, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, is teaming with George Norcross, the Democratic Party boss of southern New Jersey, and others in an effort to purchase the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily News and the company’s website, philly.com.

FCC Finally Buries 'Long Dead' Fairness Doctrine

CNS News

Twenty-four years after it stopped enforcing the Fairness Doctrine, the Federal Communications Commission is finally abolishing the regulation that mandated broadcasters to air both sides of a political issue.

“The elimination of the obsolete Fairness Doctrine regulations will remove an unnecessary distraction,” FCC Chairman Julius said in a statement Monday. “Striking this from our books ensures there can be no mistake that what has long been a dead letter remains dead.”

Enacted in 1949, the doctrine has long been recognized as hampering free speech because it resulted in broadcasters shying away from airing opinionated programming.

“The Fairness Doctrine holds the potential to chill free speech and the free flow of ideas and was properly abandoned over two decades ago,” Genachowski said. “I am pleased we are removing these and other obsolete rules from our books.”

Kerry: Conservatives don't deserve media's time

OneNewsNow

A conservative media watchdog organization finds it outrageous that Senator John Kerry recently called for censorship of the tea party movement.

The Media Research Center (MRC) says the Massachusetts Democrat took several swipes at conservatives, blaming the tea party for the nation's Standard & Poor downgrade, and he argued on MSNBC that the media should not give credence to the tea party's ideas.

"The media has got to begin to not give equal time or equal balance to an absolutely absurd notion," Kerry stated. "Just because somebody asserts it, or simply because somebody says something which everybody knows is not factual, it doesn't deserve the same credit as a legitimate idea about what you do."

But Dan Gainor, vice president for business and culture at the Culture and Media Institute of the MRC, says Kerry's comments are typical of a left-wing mindset.

"Basically, it is a totalitarian, dictatorial mindset that wants to silence any opposition," he suggests. "We warned people for years that the left wanted to have a return to the so-called 'Fairness Doctrine,' which we call the censorship doctrine. That's the kind of attitude that takes place in Cuba or the old Soviet Union."

And Gainor deems it is outrageous that Kerry and other liberals are blaming the tea party for the S&P downgrade. "When you're the president, to quote Harry Truman, 'The buck stops here;' you are responsible and the bill's come due," the conservative media watchdog argues.

He concludes that the president and his left-wing congressional allies have earned their position in the hot seat.

'Hate speech' -- tool to 'silence the powerless'

OneNewsNow

A terrorism expert and critic of Islam is pleased that a Dutch politician has been exonerated for his comments about radical Islam.

A Dutch court recently acquitted Geert Wilders of supposed "hate speech" charges, saying his statements, while offensive to many Muslims, always fell within the bounds of legitimate political debate.

In his ruling, Presiding Judge Marcel van Oosten said that Wilders' saying Islam is violent by nature, and his calls for a ban on Muslim immigration and the Quran must be seen in a wider context of debate over immigration policy. Ultimately, they could not be directly linked to increased discrimination against Dutch Muslims.

Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, is concerned that the judge never really rejected the premise of the trial.

"I think that is a disquieting thing that keeps the door open for this kind of hate speech persecution in the future," he suggests. "And hate speech, of course, the very concept of it is a tool in the hands of the powerful to silence the powerless.

White House Creates Liberal Damage Control Position

Fox News

Any press is good press, right? The Obama administration apparently doesn't think so.

The White House has created a new position dedicated to damage control in the media, but it appears the role will focus on spinning negative stories published on left-of-center websites -- or "progressive" blogs as the new job defines them -- not right-wing news outlets.

In an internal personnel memo first obtained by the Huffington Post, itself a liberal-slanted blog, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer writes that staffer Jesse Lee will head up the new initiative.

"This week, Jesse Lee will move from the new media department into a role in the communications department as Director of Progressive Media & Online Response," Pfeiffer writes.

"For the last two years, Jesse has often worn two hats working in new media and serving as the White House's liaison with the progressive media and online community. Starting this week, Jesse will take on the second role full time working on outreach, strategy and response."

White House shuts out Herald scribe

Boston Herald

The White House Press Office has refused to give the Boston Herald full access to President Obama’s Boston fund-raiser today, in e-mails objecting to the newspaper’s front page placement of a Mitt Romney op-ed, saying pool reporters are chosen based on whether they cover the news “fairly.”

“I tend to consider the degree to which papers have demonstrated to covering the White House regularly and fairly in determining local pool reporters,” White House spokesman Matt Lehrich wrote in response to a Herald request for full access to the presidential visit.

“My point about the op-ed was not that you ran it but that it was the full front page, which excluded any coverage of the visit of a sitting US President to Boston. I think that raises a fair question about whether the paper is unbiased in its coverage of the President’s visits,” Lehrich wrote.

Boehner rips bid to regulate Internet

The Washington Times

House Speaker John A. Boehner lashed out against efforts to regulate Internet traffic before an audience of evangelical Christian media leaders and pointedly responded to President Obama by comparing the challenge of the burgeoning national debt to the Sputnik-era space race.

In a speech to religious broadcasters that received a sustained ovation at his conclusion, he said free expression is under attack by a power structure in Washington populated with regulators who have never set foot inside a radio station or a television studio.

“We see this threat in how the FCC is creeping further into the free market by trying to regulate the Internet,” Mr. Boehner said.

Politically correct phrase legally incorrect

OneNewsNow

A "classic effort in propaganda" is how an immigration reform activist views a journalism society's push for the use of politically correct language in news stories concerning illegal immigration.

In its organization's magazine, Quill, the diversity committee of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) lambasts the use of the phrase "illegal immigrant" or "illegal alien" and calls on journalists to use the more politically correct "undocumented immigrants" or "undocumented workers" when reporting on the issue.

The article, written by a longtime member of the SPJ Diversity Committee, claims the descriptor "illegal alien" originated with "fiery, anti-immigrant groups" along the U.S.-Mexico border, such as the Minutemen, and is offensive to Latinos, "especially Mexicans." [Editor's note: Most border enforcement groups speak against illegal immigration, not immigration in general.]

Ira MehlmanDespite the SPJ's campaign, many mainstream journalists employ the word "illegal," and even Associated Press prefers the phrase "illegal immigrant" to "undocumented worker" in its official stylebook.

"This is a classic effort in propaganda. The people who control language often control the agenda, and if you go back and you look through history movements that have looked to control the terms of a debate, they often start with trying to control the language that's used," notes Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

Evangelists benefit from 'sword and shield'

OneNewsNow

A civil court may be the next step for four Christian evangelists who were found not guilty of breach of peace at an Arab festival in Dearborn, Michigan.

Senior litigation counsel Rob Muise of the Thomas More Law Center (TMLC) tells OneNewsNow his clients' constitutional right to free speech was violated when "they were placed in handcuffs, hauled away, and spent a night in jail."

Pakistan’s Web Censorship Guidelines to Go Beyond ‘Blasphemy’

CNS News

Stepping up efforts to prevent citizens from accessing “blasphemous” material on the Internet, Pakistani authorities have banned more than a dozen Web sites, are closely monitoring others, and reportedly are laying the groundwork to block any site viewed as meeting such vague criteria as harming “national sentiments.”

The new measures take to a new level Pakistan’s response to the dissemination online of information many Muslims regard as offensive. Beyond its borders, Pakistan is a leading force in the campaign at the United Nations – an effort led by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) -- to have such material outlawed across the globe.

Obama Warns Grads of iPad Perils

Fox News

BlackBerry-loving President Barack Obama declared war on technology, singling out Apple’s super-popular iPods and iPads for criticism at a commencement ceremony in Virginia, the New York Post reported Monday.

Obama -- whose election was credited in part to his skillful use of modern media, from smartphones to Twitter to Flickr -- on Sunday told college graduates that high-tech gizmos and apps were straining American democracy.

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said at Hampton University in southeastern Virginia.

Obama also lamented the spread of social media and blogs, through which "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction." "All of this is not only putting new pressures on you," Obama said. "It is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."

Senator to Force Vote on Bill Banning Fairness Doctrine

Business & Media Institute

Although a spokesman for President Barack Obama said the administration wouldn’t pursue the revival of the Fairness Doctrine, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, S.C., wants Senate Democrats to go on the record one way or another on the issue. DeMint, chairman of the Senate Steering Committee, said on Feb. 19 he will offer the Broadcaster Freedom Act as an amendment to the D.C. Voting Rights bill next week. The Broadcaster Freedom Act was introduced by Republican lawmakers last month and prevents the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. “I’m glad President Obama finally confirmed his opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, which attacks the right of free speech on talk radio, but many Democrats in Congress are still pushing it,” DeMint said. “With the support of the new administration, now is the time for Congress to take a stand against this kind of censorship. I intend to seek a vote on this amendment next week so every senator is on record: Do you support free speech or do you want to silence voices you disagree with?”

Clinton wants 'more balance' on airwaves

POLITICO

Even though no member of Congress has scheduled hearings on the Fairness Doctrine, it remains on a hot topic on both liberal and conservative shows. Today, radio host Mario Solis Marich asked former President Bill Clinton if it was time for "some type of enforced media accountability." "Well, you either ought to have the Fairness Doctrine or we ought to have more balance on the other side," Clinton said, "because essentially there's always been a lot of big money to support the right wing talk shows and let face it, you know, Rush Limbaugh is fairly entertaining even when he is saying things that I think are ridiculous...." Clinton said that there needs to be either "more balance in the programs or have some opportunity for people to offer countervailing opinions." Clinton added that he didn't support repealing the Fairness Doctrine, an act done under Reagan's FCC.

Sacha Baron Cohen's black Jesus to shock America

The Telegraph

The comedian, who has been sued by several people who featured in his film Borat, will be ready for similar reactions after the release of the big-screen debut of his character Bruno. The title character, a gay Austrian fashion journalist, is already well known for storming runways at designers' shows and aiming to embarrass industry figures in interviews. Clips of his work have become cult favourites on YouTube. And it is thought that the film version will see Bruno in more outrageous form. As well as the Jesus character, it is rumoured that Bruno and his boyfriend, Diesel, adopt an orphaned African baby boy called David and parade the child around fashion shows. It is thought the joke is aimed at Madonna, who adopted a Malawian baby called David Banda. A source reported to have seen the film in a test screening told The Sun: "Sacha has really gone for the shock tactics this time. The characters were created deliberately to wind up certain sections of society and Jesus is one of them. "It won't be the first time Sacha has landed himself in hot water," the source reportedly added. "The water might be a little hotter this time round, though. Religion isn't always the best place to poke fun."
