Pro-family leaders mum on Robertson's endorsement of Rudy

OneNewsNow.com

A conservative political commentator says Pat Robertson's endorsement of Rudy Giuliani for president earlier today is "a big get" for the former New York mayor, but also presents the GOP frontrunner with some complications. Robertson, the often-controversial founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and the Christian Coalition, says he is endorsing Giuliani because he is "a proven leader who is not afraid of what lies ahead and who will cast a hopeful vision for all Americans." The host of CBN's 700 Club made the announcement Wednesday at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

San Diego Mayor Backs Same-Sex Marriage

ABC News

The mayor of the nation's eighth-largest city abruptly reversed his public opposition to same-sex marriage Wednesday after revealing that his adult daughter is a lesbian. Mayor Jerry Sanders signed a City Council resolution supporting a legal fight to overturn California's prohibition on same-sex marriage. He had previously said he would veto the resolution. Sanders, a former police chief and a Republican, told reporters that he could no longer support the position he took during his mayoral campaign two years ago, when he said he favored civil unions but not full marriage rights for same-sex couples. "Two years ago, I believed that civil unions were a fair alternative," he said at a news conference. "Those beliefs, in my case, have since changed. The concept of a 'separate but equal' institution is not something that I can support."

California Legislature destroys the definition of marriage

VYM

Sacramento, California On the heels of the Democrat-controlled California State Legislature passing a bill to license "same-sex marriages," the leaders of the California campaign to fully and permanently protect marriage for one man and one woman are vowing to fight back. AB 43 by homosexual Assemblyman Mark Leno of San Francisco replaces "a man and a woman" with any "two persons" in California's marriage laws. The bill was approved 22 to 15 today (Friday, Sept. 7) by the California State Senate. All Republican senators opposed AB 43, while all but three Democrat senators supported it. The bill now goes to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for his signature or veto. This is the second time in three years that the homosexual "marriage" bill has passed the Democrat-controlled Legislature. This year, two Democrat senators who abstained on the bill in 2005, voted for it -- Denise Ducheny of San Diego and Jack Scott of Pasadena. AB 43 now goes to Gov. Schwarzenegger, who vetoed "same-sex marriages" in 2005 and has suggested he will veto this year's bill.

Gov. Arnold says 'marriage' can be terminated

WorldNetDaily - Argues in court case 'legal relationship' could be changed

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has told the state Supreme Court the term "marriage" can be terminated, because registered "domestic partners" already have all of the same legal rights, benefits, duties and obligations as married couples. The warning comes from Vote Yes Marriage.com, an organization promoting a state constitutional amendment that would restrict marriage – and its benefits and obligations – to a man and a woman. Schwarzenegger, as well as Attorney General Jerry Brown, recently submitted briefs to the state Supreme Court, which is considering a lawsuit that could result in "marriage" being granted to same-sex duos. Brown, former governor of California and mayor of Oakland, unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for president three times. As part of its deliberations, the court asked for the response from the attorney general and governor on the impact the decision could have on the state.

N.J. Ministry Sues to Prevent State from Forcing Church to Violate Religious Beliefs

CR Daily

The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of the United Methodist Church filed a federal lawsuit Saturday against New Jersey officials. The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights has threatened to prosecute the Camp Meeting Association for adhering to its deeply held religious beliefs. State officials launched an investigation after the Christian organization refused to allow a same-sex civil union ceremony at one of its worship facilities.

Forum puts Democrats in hot seat over gay issues

USA Today

Gay questioners put six Democratic presidential candidates on the spot Thursday night on issues ranging from religion and same-sex marriage to whether children should be taught about why some classmates have "two mommies." The unusually relaxed and personal forum, held in a Los Angeles studio that looked like a talk-show set, was sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which advocates for gay rights, and the gay cable network Logo. The questioners, including singer Melissa Etheridge, pulled no punches in trying to make the candidates feel their frustration over their inability to marry and other issues.

(Los Angeles, California) For the first time the leading candidates for the presidency will hold a televised debate devoted solely to LGBT issues. The one-hour event will be held on August 9 and broadcast on gay network LOGO at 9:00 pm ET (6:00 pm PT) and through live streaming video at LOGOonline.com. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards and Chris Dodd have confirmed they will participate. Several other Democratic candidates also may join the debate. The debate will be conducted with a live audience in Los Angeles. On the panel questioning the two Democrats will be Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese and singer Melissa Etheridge.

Pro-homosexual bill rammed through Maine legislature

One News Now

Members of Maine's homosexual lobby are celebrating the legislature's passage of amendments to the state Family Medical Leave Act that will add "significant employment benefits to homosexuals." According to the pro-family group Christian Civic League of Maine (CCL), an amendment to Maine's Family Medical Leave Act that includes language for "domestic partners" in state statutes will now allow homosexual couples to take unpaid time-off to care for their ill partners. LD 375, sponsored by State Senator Dennis Damon of Hancock County, passed overwhelmingly in both houses of the legislature and grants up to ten weeks of unpaid leave if homosexual couples meet the definition of "domestic partners." CCL spokesman Mike Hein says the bill passed after an intensive four-month lobbying effort by groups like Equality Maine, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) and the Maine Civil Liberties Union. "This is something that, to their credit, the homosexual lobby here in Maine made a priority and masterfully conducted and orchestrated this particular piece of legislation," he notes.

Calif. Assembly OKs Gay Marriage

ABC News

The state Assembly voted Tuesday to allow same-sex couples to marry, challenging Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has said he will veto the bill if it passes the full Legislature. Legislators approved the measure on a party-line vote of 42-34, with the majority saying lawmakers should not to wait for the state Supreme Court to act on the issue.

Bill requires hiring 'gays,' cross-dressers

WorldNetDaily

Following on the heels of an 'anti-discrimination' plan Christians insist would virtually outlaw their religious beliefs comes another proposal – introduced by openly homosexual U.S. Rep. Barney Frank – that requires businesses to give special privileges to "gay" and "transgendered" individuals. Shari Rendall, director of legislation and public policy for Concerned Women for America, the nation's largest women's public policy group, said H.R. 2015, the "Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2007," would be a disaster. "This bill would unfairly extend special privileges based upon an individual's changeable sexual behaviors, rather than focusing on immutable, non-behavior characteristics such as skin color or gender. Its passage would both overtly discriminate against and muzzle people of faith. Former Secretary of State Collin Powell put it well when he said, 'Skin color is a benign, non-behavioral characteristic. Sexual orientation is perhaps the most profound of human behavioral characteristics. Comparison of the two is a convenient but invalid argument,'" Rendall said.

Oregon To Get Domestic Partner Law

Time

(SALEM, Ore.) — Oregon on Wednesday joined a growing list of states prepared to offer gay couples at least some of the benefits of marriage. Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed legislation creating "domestic partnerships" for gays and lesbians in the state starting Jan. 1. He also signed a bill that outlaws discrimination based on sexual orientation, effective the same date. Kulongoski, a strong backer of both measures, said they would "transform our state from one of exclusion to one of complete inclusion." The measures had been attempted before but were always blocked by the Legislature until this year.

House Votes To Expand Hate Crimes Law

CBS News

(AP) Just hours after the White House issued a veto threat Thursday, the House voted to add gender and sexual orientation to the categories covered by federal hate crimes law. The House legislation, passed 237-180, also makes it easier for federal law enforcement to take part in or assist local prosecutions involving bias-motivated attacks. Similar legislation is also moving through the Senate, setting the stage for another veto showdown with President Bush.

Will Bush veto 'thought police'?

WorldNetDaily

The nation's largest public policy women's group is asking President Bush to commit to a veto of a "hate crimes" plan that, as WND has reported, opponents fear would target Christians and be used to demolish both freedom of speech and religion in the United States. "Last week the House Judiciary Committee, egged on by radical homosexual groups, passed what can only be called a Thought Crimes bill," said former White House insider Chuck Colson in his Breakpoint commentary. "It's called the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. But this bill is not about hate. It's not even about crime. It's about outlawing peaceful speech – speech that asserts that homosexual behavior is morally wrong."

Conservative Black Pastors Fight Bill on Hate Crimes

Washington Post

A coalition of conservative African American pastors is lobbying Congress to vote against a bill that would extend federal hate-crimes laws to cover gays, saying they fear it would prevent them from preaching against homosexuality. Several pastors last week urged House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), a sponsor of the bill, and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote against the proposed Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Gay rights bills pass Oregon House

USA Today

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Same-sex couples would receive the same benefits as married couples, and gays and lesbians would be protected against discrimination under bills approved Tuesday by the Oregon House. The Senate is expected to pass the two bills and Gov. Ted Kulongoski plans to sign both. The first bill would enable same-sex couples to enter into contractual relationships that grant them the same benefits offered to married couples under state law. The bill refers to the relationships as "domestic partnerships."
