On Tuesday, the White House made clear its intentions to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama "is proud" to support what is being called the "Respect for Marriage Act" -- a bill (S. 598) sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California). The legislation, as Carney put it, "would take the Defense of Marriage Act off the books once and for all."
In response, House Speaker John Boehner described DOMA as "the law of the land" -- and vowed that the House will continue in its effort to ensure that DOMA's constitutionality "is determined by the courts rather than by a unilateral action by the Obama administration." Maggie Gallagher, chair of the National Organization for Marriage, called Obama's endorsement of Feinstein's bill "political theatrics," stating there is "zero chance that Congress is going to repeal [the law] anytime soon."
The administration has refused to defend DOMA in the several challenges currently making their way through federal courts.

Three mornings a week, when Becky Leung gets ready for work, her boyfriend is just getting home from his overnight job. When her mother drops hints about her twin sister's marriage, she laughs it off. And when she thinks about getting married herself, she worries first about her career.
Leung, 27, cohabits in a Portland, Ore., townhome with her boyfriend but has no plans yet to wed, a reflection of the broader cultural shift in the U.S. away from the traditional definition of what it means to be a household.
Data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau shows married couples have found themselves in a new position: They're no longer the majority.
It's a trend that's been creeping along for decades, but in the 2010 Census, married couples represent 48 percent of all households. That's down from 52 percent in the last Census and, for the first time in U.S. history, puts households led by married couples as a plurality.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) today said he plans to take action to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which the Obama administration and Department of Justice recently decided was unconstitutional and, therefore, announced it would not defend.
Boenher's office today released this statement:
"I will convene a meeting of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group for the purpose of initiating action by the House to defend this law of the United States, which was enacted by a bipartisan vote in Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton.
"It is regrettable that the Obama Administration has opened this divisive issue at a time when Americans want their leaders to focus on jobs and the challenges facing our economy.
"The constitutionality of this law should be determined by the courts -- not by the president unilaterally -- and this action by the House will ensure the matter is addressed in a manner consistent with our Constitution."

The federal judge who overturned California's same-sex "marriage" ban has more bad news for the measure's sponsors: he not only is unwilling to keep homosexual couples from marrying beyond next Wednesday, he doubts the ban's backers have the right to challenge his ruling.
Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker on Thursday rejected a request to delay his decision striking down Proposition 8 from taking effect until high courts can take up an appeal lodged by its supporters. One of the reasons, the judge said, is he's not sure the proponents have the authority to appeal since they would not be affected by or responsible for implementing his ruling.

The battle over gay marriage is about to ratchet up a notch.
The Obama administration is "reviewing the decision" that a Massachusetts judge made on Thursday declaring a federal ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional on the grounds it violates states' rights.
Experts say U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro's ruling could have far reaching effects if upheld.

On Monday, the spotlight will be even brighter, when a trial challenging California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage, begins in U. S. District Court in San Francisco. Demonstrators are expected to be out in force. There also may be a camera in the courtroom if the ballot initiative's sponsors fail in their 11th hour bid to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to keep it out.
Perry and Stier, along with Jeffrey Zarrillo and Paul Katami, of Los Angeles, are the two couples at the heart of the case, arguing that California's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. They are asking Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker to issue an injunction against Proposition 8's enforcement.

1/7/2010 | Healthcare, Marriage
Wall Street Journal
Some married couples would pay thousands of dollars more for the same health insurance coverage as unmarried people living together, under the health insurance overhaul plan pending in Congress.
The built-in "marriage penalty" in both House and Senate healthcare bills has received scant attention. But for scores of low-income and middle-income couples, it could mean a hike of $2,000 or more in annual insurance premiums the moment they say "I do."
The disparity comes about in part because subsidies for purchasing health insurance under the plan from congressional Democrats are pegged to federal poverty guidelines. That has the effect of limiting subsidies for married couples with a combined income, compared to if the individuals are single.

The same-sex marriage bill, which passed the New York Assembly for the third time last night with virtually no debate and a 88-51 vote, is teed up and ready to be moved to the floor of the Senate for debate.
One Senate Democratic source expressed confidence, saying:
"We said from the start that we weren't going to take it up until we had the votes to pass it, and we're taking it up today."

Gov. David Paterson on Monday urged lawmakers to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, calling it "an issue that touches on the very core of our citizenship."
His request raises the hopes of gay advocates who suffered a major defeat in Maine when voters repealed that state's same-sex-marriage law last week.
The Rev. Jason McGuire of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms said Tuesday's results in Maine have shown even moderate Republicans that they can't afford to back the measure going into the 2010 elections. He said the group is confident they have 35 or 36 senators opposed to the measure, which would block passage in the 62-seat house.

The tide of extending marriage rights to same-sex couples -- which has swept across New England in recent months -- has stopped at Maine.
Voters rejected a state law Tuesday that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed. The repeal comes just six months after the measure was passed by the Maine legislature and signed by the Democratic Gov. John Baldacci.
For the gay rights movement, which has gained a foothold in New England, it was a stinging defeat. Gay marriage has now lost in every state — 31 in all — in which it has been put to a popular vote.

The hearings are beginning on a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in the District, and the D.C. Council is on track to vote on a final bill by December. Will it take the steps necessary to protect religious people and groups from any unintended consequences from this act?
As it stands, the same-sex marriage bill before the council contains three clauses purporting to protect religious liberty. But a careful analysis makes clear that these clauses are woefully inadequate and provide protection that is more illusory than real.

In an exclusive interview with FOXNews.com's Courtney Friel, Miss California says her phone has been ringing off the hook with people offering her support after she took on a question about gay marriage on Sunday night's Miss USA telecast.
"I have no regrets about answering [judge Perez Hilton] honestly," she said in one of her first interviews following the show, where she answered that she was against gay marriage becoming legal in California. "He asked me for my opinion and I gave it to him. I have nothing against gay people and I didn't mean to offend anyone in my answer."
...FOXNews.com: How are you feeling today?
Carrie Prejean: Honestly, happy. This happened for a reason. By having to answer that question in front of a national audience, God was testing my character and faith. I'm glad I stayed true to myself.
FOXNews.com: Have a lot of people been trying to get in touch with you?
Carrie Prejean: Yes, lots of phone calls. I've gotten...hundreds of messages from people I don’t know, saying how proud of me they are that I stood my ground. That made me the real winner of the night.
FOXNews.com: Did your stomach sink when you first heard you picked Perez Hilton's question?
Carrie Prejean: I had a gut feeling. I knew he was controversial, and so was the question. Out of all the topics I studied up on, I dreaded that one, I prayed I would not be asked about gay marriage. If I had any other question, I know I would have won.
...FOXNews.com: Are you upset that Perez Hilton called you a "b**ch" in his blog rant?
Carrie Prejean: Yes, but I have no regrets about answering honestly. He asked me for my opinion and I gave it to him. I have nothing against gay people, and I didn't mean to offend anyone in my answer.

Gov. Paterson introduced legislation Thursday to legalize gay marriage in New York state - to raucous applause from lawmakers and advocates.
"The time has come to act," said Paterson, joined in his Manhattan office by Mayor Bloomberg. "The time has come to bring marriage equality to the state of New York."
Paterson's move came one day after New York's new archbishop, Timothy Dolan, made clear he would vigorously fight same-sex marriage legislation.
The governor noted his bill was the same one introduced in 2007, when it passed the Democrat-controlled Assembly before dying in the Senate.
The audience cheered and whooped wildly after Paterson announced his bill.
"It's time for this state to take the next step and insure the rights of same-sex couples," Bloomberg said.
Paterson, flanked by City Council head Christine Quinn, state Sen. Tom Duane and other officials, compared the need for same-sex marriage to the battle to abolish slavery.
"I understand the trepidation and anxiety people are feeling right now," Paterson said. "Rights should not be stifled by fears. What we should understand is silence should not be a response to injustice."
Although Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith backs the legislation, he doubts if there are sufficient votes to pass the measure.

Four years ago, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples, he seemed to put the kibosh on any thought of a statewide political career.
After all, that same year California voters approved Proposition 22, a defense-of-marriage initiative, by more than 61 percent. A Field Poll taken in May 2004 showed that Californians disapproved of same-sex marriage by a margin of 50 percent to 44 percent.
Fast forward to 2008, however, and suddenly Mr. Newsom looks politically reborn.
Mr. Newsom, 40, announced last week the formation of an exploratory committee for a 2010 California gubernatorial run, and political strategists agree that his strong identification with the gay-marriage issue should help him in the Democratic primary.

We used to know what infidelity was: sex with someone other than your mate.
But the 21st century seems to have blurred those clear-cut lines. Is having lunch every day with an opposite-sex work friend a breach of marital trust? What about a flirtation online? If there's no sex, is it really cheating?
Such questions arise as societal and psychological pressures challenge deep-rooted ideas about the nature of infidelity. "We are as a society finally coming to grips with what it means to be faithful," says Douglas Snyder, a psychologist at Texas A&M University-College Station. "It doesn't just mean to have sex with someone else."

NeW Media Advisory
WASHINGTON D.C.—On Friday, June 27th, countercultural college women from some of the nation’s top universities will gather for the third annual Network of enlightened Women (NeW) National Conference at the Heritage Foundation from 11:30am-3pm.
TIME Magazine says, NeW is a “…fast-growing campus alternative to the Feminist Majority and the National Organization of Women…” and “…NeW is catching on across the nation.”
These NeW leaders will discuss how they are making a difference in the 2008 presidential election among Generation Y voters by rebutting feminist orthodoxy, such as the claims of rampant sexism and the “glass ceiling” made by Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. These women will also share their victories in challenging radical feminists on college campuses and plan ways to change the course of the women’s movement in America. These modern-day women, who are working in Washington for the summer for Congress, at law firms and at corporations, are the next generation of the nation’s female leaders, and they reject radical feminism.
Danielle Crittenden, author of What Our Mothers Didn’t Tell Us: Why Happiness Eludes the Modern Woman, will deliver the keynote address, arguing that many feminist ideas, such as blaming men and pursuing independence at all costs, have “failed” women.
NeW Founder and President, Karin Agness, will officially launch the NeW blog to provide the perspective of culturally conservative young women on current issues, ideas and pop culture.

Six in 10 Americans say the government should not regulate whether gays and lesbians can marry the people they choose, a survey finds.
As same-sex couples line up to get marriage licenses in California on June 17, the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found that 63% of adults say same-sex marriage is "strictly a private decision" between two people.
That the government has the right "to prohibit or allow" such marriages was stated by 33%, and 4% had no opinion.

Single women and lesbian couples won landmark parental rights last night as MPs voted to remove the requirement that fertility clinics consider a child’s need for a father.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill will replace the rule with a “need for supportive parenting” after opponents were defeated in two votes by unexpectedly wide margins.
The Government had been prepared for defeat but won the free votes by majorities of 75 and 68. The decisions mean that the legislation will grant the most significant extension to homosexual family rights since gay adoption was sanctioned.
It will stop fertility clinics turning away lesbians and single women because their children will not have a father or male role model. While the current law does not block such therapy, it is sometimes used to justify refusals.

Divorce and abortion are offences in the sight of God, Pope Benedict XVI charged Saturday, while calling on the Catholic Church to be merciful to those who had experienced such events.
"The ethical judgement of the Church on divorce and abortion is clear and well-known," he told participants in a Catholic congress on marriage and the family.
"They are serious offences... which violate human dignity, inflict deep injustice on human and social relations and offend God himself, guarantor of conjugal peace and origin of life," he said.
However he added that there were people who had committed such "errors" but "suffered from wounds to the soul" and "sought peace."
"The Church has the duty to be close to these people with love and delicacy," the pope added.
"Divorce and abortion are choices... which sometimes develop in difficult and dramatic circumstances... and are a source of profound suffering for those who take such decisions.
"They also affect innocent victims, the barely-conceived and unborn infant, the children caught up in divorces."

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The California Supreme Court appeared divided on Tuesday over whether to allow gay marriage during nearly four hours of oral arguments on the contentious issue that could impact gay rights nationwide.
Several of the seven judges asked whether the state legislature might better decide whether matrimony should be limited to a man and a woman, while others pointed to how the same court ended the state ban on marriages between blacks and whites after World War Two.
"I think it's going to be a divided opinion but I wouldn't want to predict who will win," Christopher Krueger, a lawyer representing the state attorney general who presented arguments before the judges, told Reuters.
The hearing brought into focus the highest-profile U.S. fight over gay rights in recent years and the outcome could influence legislation and lawsuits in other states on what has been a hot-button issue in recent election campaigns.
