Barry Bonds, baseball's all-time leading home run hitter, was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday on charges of perjury and obstructing justice for allegedly lying about using steroids.
The indictment in San Francisco probably ends the 43-year-old slugger's career three months after he broke Hank Aaron's home run record under a cloud of suspicion about whether Bonds had taken performance-enhancing drugs. Now Bonds — a hulking symbol of an era in baseball that featured booming home runs and questions about whether steroids were tainting the game's integrity — could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

When demonstrators rally on the steps of the U.S. Justice Department Friday to protest the government's handling of hate crimes, blogger-turned-activist Shane Johnson will be waiting for them with a protest of his own.
Johnson and a modest band of supporters are pushing back against the outpouring of black support for black male offenders, such as the Jena 6, saying it comes at the expense of female victims of black-on-black crime.

OSLO (Reuters) - The world should quickly ban cloning of humans and only allow exceptions for strictly controlled research to help treat diseases such as diabetes or Alzheimer's, a U.N. study said on Sunday.
Without a ban, experts at the U.N. University's Institute of Advanced Studies said that governments would have to prepare legal measures to protect clones from "potential abuse, prejudice and discrimination".
"A legally-binding global ban on work to create a human clone, coupled with freedom for nations to permit strictly controlled therapeutic research, has the greatest political viability of options available," the study said.
"Whichever path the international community chooses it will have to act soon -- either to prevent reproductive cloning or to defend the human rights of cloned individuals," said A.H. Zakri, head of the Institute, which is based in Yokohama,

A conservative political commentator says Pat Robertson's endorsement of Rudy Giuliani for president earlier today is "a big get" for the former New York mayor, but also presents the GOP frontrunner with some complications.
Robertson, the often-controversial founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and the Christian Coalition, says he is endorsing Giuliani because he is "a proven leader who is not afraid of what lies ahead and who will cast a hopeful vision for all Americans." The host of CBN's 700 Club made the announcement Wednesday at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

HAVING large families should be frowned upon as an environmental misdemeanour in the same way as frequent long-haul flights, driving a big car and failing to reuse plastic bags, says a report to be published today by a green think tank.
The paper by the Optimum Population Trust will say that if couples had two children instead of three they could cut their family's carbon dioxide output by the equivalent of 620 return flights a year between London and New York.

The day of terror at the Virginia Polytechnic and State University in Blacksburg began at about 7:15 a.m., with the shooting of a woman and a male resident adviser on the fourth floor of a dorm building on campus. Kristen Bensley, a freshman who lived below the floor where the shooting occurred, told TIME, "There were rumors going on about [the assailant] was fighting with his girlfriend or something of that nature." Bensley notes that only residents can get into the building, using a specific "passport," that is, a card that one has to swipe in order to open doors before 10 a.m. If he was an outsider, someone would have had to let him in. Or more likely, he was a resident of the dorm himself. If so, how did he keep so much ammunition unnoticed? Two weapons have reportedly been recovered, one 22 caliber, the other a 9 mm.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wade Horn, the Bush administration's point man for welfare reform, Head Start and abstinence education, resigned Monday as assistant secretary for children and families.
In the Department of Health and Human Services, Horn oversaw a $46 billion budget and 65 programs that serve vulnerable children and families. He is best known for his work on issues embraced by social conservatives, such as more money for faith-based groups and organizations that work to help couples improve their marriage.
Republicans gave some of those programs significant funding increases when they were in the majority. For example, Congress set aside for the next five years up to $100 million a year to promote marriage and $50 million a year to produce committed fathers. Similar expansions may be harder to come by with a Democratic majority.

Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly is giving her support to two Northwest Suburban High School District 214 board candidates, adding fuel to the fire in an already heated race.
In letters mailed to local members of her Alton-based Eagle Forum political action committee — which supports what it calls “pro-family” candidates — Schlafly endorses challengers Ken Frizane and Dennis Konczyk, pointing out that one is a church youth group leader and the other a church elder.
The letter criticizes incumbent candidates Bill Dussling, Alva Kreutzer and Bob Zimmanck for their support of what she calls “pornographic” books at the heart of a curriculum debate last spring — and what she considers a lax approach to staff conduct in the aftermath of the conviction of former teacher Jason Krigas on sex abuse charges last year.

HAMPTON, N.H. — Some parents are protesting the "sex" edition of the student newspaper at Winnacunnet High School. Several said they were especially offended by a photograph of two women kissing under the headline, "Why men love women who love women," a quiz question about anal sex, and an interview with an unnamed custodian who said he had found a vibrator in the girls' shower.
"Those articles offended me personally as a parent," said Venus Merrill, a school board member. "It's not something you want to read with your 10-year-old and it's not something that should be going home."
Principal Randy Zito said the Winnachronicle had crossed the line of responsible reporting and that he had dealt with the problem privately. He also said he had pulled copies of the paper that normally would have been sent to middle schools in the cooperative school district.

PHILADELPHIA, March 22, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A US district court judge stuck down a 1998 law passed by Congress against Internet pornography that made it a crime for commercial website operators to let children under 18 view pornographic materials.
Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr., who presided over the four-week trial last fall, ruled in favor of the American Civil Liberties Union that the 1998 Child Online Protection Act (COPA) violated a constitutional right to free speech

LONDON, March 22, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK's Sexual Orientation Regulations, that will make it illegal for Christian schools, services and businesses to operate according to their religious principles, passed its last hurdle last night in a vote in the House of Lords.
A last minute attempt to defeat the legislation failed. A motion by Baroness O'Caithain that would have scrapped the Regulations on the grounds of anti-religious discrimination was voted down 168 votes to 122. The regulations will be implemented at the end of April.
